: : Can someone tell me meaning of "Liu" ?

: : I have seen Liu as both first name and last name?
: : How is this possible?

: : Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

: Its possible because the phonetic : liu, can be several different characters in chinese.

: The surname liu means to kill, and it was once a prefecture in the Duchy of Zheng during the Warring States Period. Liu is the surname of all the 24 Han Dynasty Emperors.

I do NOT believe the surname liu means to kill. Kill is . That is ENTIRELY different from liu. and anyway, if it really means to kill, why would there be such a sirname? The originators certainly didn't want to be called "to kill". And I am certain NOBODY wants to be called "to kill", especially the emperors. So if Liu really means "to kill" why would there be such a sirname at all? IF this meaning (to kill) popped up afterwards, then "to kill" is NOT the original meaning.
