I am researching my wife's family tree. Her maternal grandfather, Hoy Sing aka Herman Hoy Sing Wu was reputedly born in Port Gibson MS June 28, 1904. I say "reputedly" because the only "proof" is an affadavit made out in the 1930s claiming that he was.
The reason I have my doubts is that although he said he was raised by a Dr. James Lee who was an uncle after his father died in 1905 (or thereabouts) and his mother returned to Louisianna and married someone by the name of Fairbeam, he could read/write Chinese and spoke English with a very difficult-to-understand Chinese accent. The 1910 and 1920 census data do not support his claim and he would send money to his "other" family in Toisan.
If anyone has any suggestions on (a) how to verify his Toisan roots, (b) his whereabouts in the U.S. or any other data I would be grateful. Especially if the resource is online.
Thank you.
