: T's and D's are tough because before standardization many times the D sound was written as T. It's the same with O's and A's. For example, the name Wang is pronounced with the long vowel sound, like Wong, so it was spelled with an O before standardization. Tong could be the name now standardized as Tang. Also try Dong (sometimes spelled Doong) and Dang. You'll probably find one of those surnames to be very common in the region.

Not sure how you fit in to the family Margeret, but my grandfathers name is William. I am thinking of writing a book about his life and wondered why it was that you wanted to know about "The Name Tong"? I know it's not my buisness but a response would be great. Thank-you. Our last name is supposedly from chinese language also.
