It would be safe to say that your father's name of Chin Yung (Young) followed Chinese practice; I am assuming he did not do a switch before he gave it to the officials who registered him upon arrival. That being the case, his surname (Chin)was identified first, and his personal name (Yung/Young) last. As to which Chinese character for his Chin, can you identify what dialect he spoke?
