The majority of Chinese immigrants who went to the Philippines originated from southern Fujian Province and spoke Hokkien. It is hard to tell which Ang your maternal gf belonged to; there are at least two possibilities. The first one is Hong in Mandarin meaning "flood" and the other is Wang mean an " expanse of water"; both are pronounced Ang in Hokkien.
