I happen to be looking for information on the Hongo family name when I came across your message. Earnest Hongo was my grandfather's name.
My father was Floyd Hongo who was from Natchitoches, Louisiana. The original family name is Hung Cho. The story goes...that three brothers came over from China and migrated to Louisiana. When the city took a cencus of it's
population...the name was changed from Hung cho to Hongo because of the annuciation of a Frenchman who was taking the cencus. He wrote the name as he pronounced it....thus the name Hongo. Now, I was told that the brothers married outside of the race. One married a hispanic, one married a white and the other married a black. Now I dont know if this is true are not, but I am a Black American. This information was told to me when I was 10 years old by my fathers brother, who's name was Reuben Hongo. Both my Father and his Brother are deceased now. There is suppose to be a book called the Migration of the Chinese written by a Dr. Cohen. She became interested in the Hongo name after she had married into the family and began her reseach.
Which uncover the Hongo name as far as Hawaii,
Oklahoma and Louisianna. Please fill free to contact me for I to have always been curious about others with the same last name.
