Chinese name normally come in 3 parts.
1 The surname which come first like Gon, Lai, Wong, Zhao.
2 The generation name which indicate the generation you are from in the family tree.
3 The name which is unique to yourself.
It is common to have only 2 words for name. However the 2 word practice is more common in China recently. I was told by some mainland Chinese that during the culture revolution in China, family tree is deem to be a bad thing. Many therefore give only 2 word for their childs. While overseas, most Chinese keep their traditions and have 3 words for name.
