Actually our name is from the movie Inn of the Sixth Happiness played by Ingrid Bergman in 1959. It's a true story. What I've been told is that it means the one who loves people. This is from an article my mother found in an Ann Landers column when I was young. I've encountered a few Ja-Ni's in my life - all of us spelling our names differently. In the Ann Landers article the name is spelled Gen ai. I've spoken to a few people who either speak Mandarin or Catonese, yet no one seems to recognize our name. I am trying to find my name in the Chinese characters, unsuccessfully. Please let me know if you find anything else out about our name.
