If your great-uncle traced his root further back in time, he might have come upon a man by the name of Gongzi Luo, from whose given name his descend- ants derived their family name. Gongzi Luo happened to be a descendant of Jiang Tai-gong, the founder of the state of Qi in the early part of the Zhou dynasty. Luo ranked no. 152 in the Hundred Family Names listing (504 in total). Now- adys, it ranks No. 156 among 1436 family names that appeared in three censuses in China taken during the 1980's by some government agencies and it consisted of 0.08146% of China's population.
If you are looking for any Luo's out there, consider Gary Lok, the governor of the state of Washington, U.S.A. His Chinese name is Luo Jia-hui in which his surname is pronound "Lock" in Cantonese. About two years ago, he went back to Xinhui County, Guangdong Province to look for his roots, if I remember correctly. He might have some information for you if you ask.
