That character( �p ) means camel in Cantonese.
lok(cantonese)=luo(mandarin).
Gary Locke, mayor or govenor or whatever, of Washington USA is a LOK. He supposedly is from my dad's village, but changed his chinese sounding LOK to LOCKE (because of Western influence....possibly).
Remember back then, Chinese people were Chinese with Chinese characters for a last name. They have to make up a Western name when they move out of Asia so that the government can keep track of them to collect taxes. =)!
Back in the olden days, there used to be small villages all over HK or China. People of each of those villages share the same last name.
So....everyone isn't necessarily related....just friendly neighbours.

You're grandpa's Chinese name has 2 characters (ex. AB) cuz that's his first(B) and last name(A). Which makes his first name "Tin"(B) or however you spell it.
If there are 3 characters (ex. ABC), the middle(B) and last character(C) would be like saying "Hewitt Jennifer Love" as opposed to "Jennifer Love Hewitt".
