Assuming that the surname of interest is Lum, I believe the family clan name Lum is prevalent in the area near Gujing Town in the Xinhui District of Guangdong Province in southern China. Xinhui District is one of the 4 Sze Yup districts, the other 3 being Toishan, Hoiping and Enping districts. A couple of villages in the area that I'm aware of are predominantly of the Lum surname. In localized dialect, they are "Mah Jow" village and "Sahn How" village near Gujing Town. I'm not sure when many of the Chinese in the area migrated mostly from northern China, but many villages at one time had a "jook po" ("zupu" in Mandarin) which is a family clan genealogy book written in Chinese. Some of the village "jook po" have been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970's. If the Lum family clan "jook po" still exists in these 2 villages, much of the answers to your genealogical quest may lie in the "jook po" if you can get a copy of it from the villages and get it translated into English. Also, I understand that many Lum males migrated to the US in the late 1800's/early 1900's, so there may very well be a Lum family clan association or district association in larger Chinese communities such as San Francisco or New York. As such, some Lum family information may lie in these association records as well.....perhaps even your father's and grandfather's names. Good luck on your genealogical quest.
