And as for those Javanese who DO have a surname, the surnames aren't usually inherited. In my family, there's a system in which sometimes the dad's first name becomes the child's surname. This would be like, in the western world, a man called John Samson having a son called Peter John, and Peter John having a son called Richard Peter, and so on- well, I don't know if this goes for ALL Javanese, but that's how it goes in my family- I'm not too sure what happens with the women, though, whether they take their mother's surnames or their father's. And some members of my family simply make up their own surnames- they had one when they were born but might not like it and therefore change it- that's what many of my cousins have done. OTHER cousins of mine, on the other hand, follow the Western system and either inherit or create a surname and make this surname their children's too. So there are really many different kinds of Indonesian names in Java alone.
