I was told by my father that my paternal greatgrandfather came from Toishan to Singapore many many years ago.
We are "sun ling" and not hakka.
Greatgrandfather settled down in Singapore and had 3 wives. I was told my greatgrandmother was the eldest wife and she came from Malacca. Hence she was what we call in Singapore and Malaysia "nonya" or "peranakan". She wore Malay-like customes caleld sarong kebayas. I have never met my greatgrandparents.
My paternal grandfather was his second son and he had 2 wives, 10 sons and 3 daughters. He used to commute between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and he eventually passed away in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya as it was called then many years ago. My father was his 9th son and he too has passed away in Singapore many years ago. We have little knowledge of our ancestry in China except that we know our ancestors were "sun ling from Toishan". We have lost contact with people in Toishan. We cannot speak "sun ling" dialect. We speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin and some Malay.
I wonder if it is possible to contact some body in Toishan, China, who may have some books containing the names of our ancestors especially our grandfather's.
