Jane (maiden name unknown) is the common ancestor of the Marker and McCartney families in Fayette County, Penna.

Jane was first married to John Marker. Linda Marker feels that he is probably the son of Henry or Mathias Marker of Somerset Co., Penna. Both of these brothers are known to have a son John. At the present time Linda is leaning toward the brother Mathias who moved to Westmoreland Co., Penna. and left a will stating that his son, John, was dead but had children which unfortunately were not named. There are two John Markers enumerated in the 1810 census in the part of Allegany Co., Md. that is now Garrett Co., Md. Maybe these Johns were one or both of the John Markers from across the state line in Somerset Co. Adam Yeast is another interesting coincidence. Adam is enumerated in the 1810 census close to John Marker, the Yeasts and the Markers are both Methodist, and some of Adam Yeast's descendents end up in Fayette County on the National Pike next to some of Jane's children by her second husband.

The location of John's death or burial remains unknown.

Linda Marker has put together a page about the descendents of John & Jane Marker

After John's death, Jane married James McCartney. Jane, her first husband, and their family had been in Garrett Co., Md. in 1816 and James had been somewhere in Maryland, but their first child, Nicholas, was born in Penna. in 1818 and it seems that they spent the remainder of their lives in Fayette County. Jane and James also had three daugthers and a foster son.

Jane & John's older daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Marker, married Charles Rush, brother of Sebastian "Boss" Rush; and after his death she married William Smith.

Carolyn Smith has an interest in the some of her descendents.

Jane & John's younger daughter, Elizabeth Marker, was married to Judge Samuel Shipley.

Alvin John Shipley is interested in this part of the family. His grandfather, Julius Shipley, is one of Elizabeth & Samuel's sons.

Sherrill is interested in this part of the family for her son and grandchildren. Her first husband was a great-grandson of Diocletian Shipley, one of Elizabeth & Samuel's sons.

Jane & John's only known son, John Henry Marker, was a teamster on the National Pike. He and his wife, Catherine Ann "Kittie" Inks, are buried with their youngest child, George, in the Sansom Chapel Cemetery. Jack Bell and Alan R. Rockwell, Jr. (me on are right) are shown standing at their tombstone. The most recent ancestor that Jack and I share is Ellis Beggs Marker, one of John and Kittie's sons. Jack and my grandfather, Clarence Beckner Rockwell, were grandsons of Ellis.

The Ellis Beggs Marker story is an interesting one!

He was first buried in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, North Union Township, Fayette County, Penna. His body was exhumed and reburied together with his wife, Mary Ann Bivens, in Oak Grove Cemetery, Uniontown, Penna. Some members of the family contended that all they moved were his bones and some of the other soil remaining was him, so he has tombstones in both cemeteries, and is sometimes referred to as "twice buried."

are descended from Jesse Elmer Marker, Sr. and his wife, Martha Jane Kunkle. Jesse is the son of Charles Bernard Marker, another one of John and Kittie's sons. They are both members of the MARKER Mailing List, and thery were gracious hosts to Linda Marker Simmons and me at the 1999 Marker-Kunkle Reunion. Many of John & Kittie's descendants remain in the Fayette County area, and commune with food and music.
They are a delightful group, and very talented!
