Carl Theodore Mumme

Carl Theodore Mumme

February 24, 1838 - November 28, 1902

Carl Theodore Mumme was the third of four children of Ludwig Heinrich Gottfried Mumme and Magadalene Wagner of Braunschweig, Germany. He was born February 24, 1938, and was baptized at the St. Katharinen Church in Braunschweig January 12, 1810.

He immigrated to America in 1849 with his parents and his brother, Heinrich Carl Ferdinand Mumme. He was eleven years old at the time they settled in Medina County, Texas.

Little is known of Carl Theodore's boyhood, either here or in Germany. From writings, poems, sermons and notes of his, it is evident that his education must have been very good. Since Texas was still a comparatively raw country in 1849, it is believed he got his educational background before coming to America.

On Dec. 26, 1858, Carl Theodore was united in marriage to Elise Ernst. Elise Ernst Mumme was born November 5, 1839, in Herzthume, Nassau, Germany, and was united in marriage on December 26, 1858, with Carl Theodore Mumme by the Reverend Friar Vordenbaumen.

Six children were born to Elise and Carl Theodore - one must have died at birth since only five children have been listed in the records:

Wilhelm (William) T. Mumme - (Nov 30, 1860 - 1928)
Emma E. Mumme - (Aug 28, 1862 - Sep 25, 1936)
Theodore Ernst Mumme - (Jan 8,1865 - Feb 24, 1948)
Louise E. Mumme - (Dec 9, 1866 - Oct 15, 1892)
Louis Theodore Mumme - (Feb 25, 1868 - Feb 5, 1946)
