Mumme Book - Introduction

An Introduction to Mrs. L.W. Mumme's Book

The Mummes in America - 1849 - 1962

Mrs. L.W. (Agnes) Mumme of Dilley, Texas started researching the Mumme Family in 1961. She interviewed and corresponded with many members of the family and started recording the data. She visited Europe and Germany several times and engaged genealogists to help her with the research. She published a typed copy of the book which was duplicated and distributed to members of the family during the 1960's.

Mrs. L.W. Mumme continued her travels and her research and made a number of revisions to the original publication. Since it was a "typed" manuscript, it was revised through the use of addendums and corrections.

At some point in time, Mrs. Mumme contributed a copy of the book to the Church of the Latter Day Saints who keep large amounts of genealogical data. A number of Mumme descendants located the microfilm in various LDS libraries and made copies of it.

Mrs. L.W. Mumme died in 1996, and was survived by her husband, L.W."Sonny" Mumme and her son, Louis William Mumme, II, both of whom still live in Dilley, Texas. (May 3, 2000)

During 1999, I made contact with Glenda Mumme of Balwyn, Victoria, Australia through the Internet, Glenda had been researching the Mumme name for about 30 years. We started corresponding by E-Mail, and she informed me of the book and started providing me with snippets pertaining to my wife's branch of the family.

I contacted the LDS library in New York City and they identified the microfilm record number of the book for me. The people in NY ordered the microfilm so we could review it and copy it in the NYC library. After a couple of months, LDS advised us the microfilm is now restricted and can only be viewed in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Coincidentally, I made contact with Roland Mumme, Jr. of Odessa, Texas through the Internet. He advised me that he had a copy of the book in his possession. He agreed to mail it to me so I could copy it. I was able to make a copy of the book and to scan it into my computer. Unfortunately, the copy was not good enough to allow me to use OCR on it to convert it to text. So, I have been transcribing the information as time permits, and this section of the website is the result of that effort.

The book came to me with several updates and addendums. I have tried to make all of the changes, additions and corrections which were included in the updates. As a result, some pages run longer than the originals.

It is my hope that the publication of her book on the Internet will enable other interested descendants to read it and/or download a copy for their family.

The information contained in this book goes back several decades and it needs to be updated. I would appreciate the assistance and feedback of any member of the family which will enable us to update the material and to preserve it for future generations.
