Let me point out here that Lincoln found it difficult to win a war that was primarily based on states rights issues so in the later years of the war, he added the slavery issue into the mix. Most Southerners were against slavery but by this time it was just another example of big government trying to take over everything. Well, we all know how it turned out. The slaves were freed, states got more authority, millions of soldiers were killed, and Lincoln was murdered.
