In 1841 Mary Pye b.1829 was 13 Living with her father Thomas 45, b abt 1791, her mother Esther 45 b. abt 1791, James 15 b.1826, Ann 15 b.1826, Alice 10 b.1831, and Elizabeth 6 b.1835, in Eccleston.
Curiously, there is a James Pye 35, living next door with Ellen Allen 40, and her children. (Is this a brother of Thomas Pye?)
*Ages of adults in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.
By 1851 James and Ann had left the household.
In 1851 Mary Pye was living with her father Thomas Pye 60, a labourer at a glass works, mother Esther 60, and sisters Alice Pye 18, and Elizabeth Pye 16, at 49 Bold Street, Eccleston. | Glass
making was carried on in St Helens by the early 18th
century but in the late 18th century it too boomed.
In 1773 The British Cast Plate Glass Manufacturers
opened works in St Helens. In the 19th century St
Helens was dominated by the coal and glass industries. |

Living at 10 Groves Row, Sutton, the family comprised of Hugh Glover(32), a coal miner from Rainford, wife Mary (32) from Prescot, with children Hester (11), Ruth,(7), Jane (5), and Mary (2).
Eccleston is a small village near St. Helens.
Also present in the same house at this time were the following nephews and neices...William Bibby (16), George Webster (10), Henry Webster (14), Mary Ann Webster (7) and Robert Webster (18).

In 1871 Hugh Glover and Mary were living at 54 Knowl Brow (spelling unsure?), Skelmersdale.
Mary was then aged 41, from Prescot, and their children at this time are Ruth (18), Jane (15), Mary (12), Elizabeth (8), Thomas (5), and Sarah Ann (2).
*The daughter, Ruth Glover married John Smith in Prescot in 1871.
In 1881 and 1891, the family was living in Hardings Row, Rainford.

In 1901 Mary Glover was still living in Hardings Row with her (by then) married daughter Mary. Noticeably, her husband is not present at the time of the census.
Also the census gives Flint as Mary Glovers birthplace. I suspect that this is a transcription error.
Death of Mary Glover (Pye)
Mary Glover (Pye) died in 1905 aged 76 |
