From the 1851 census

At this stage, the 'best interpretation' of the birthplace of James Gudgeon (from the 1851 census, above) is Benton, Yorkshire (unsure). If anyone has local knowledge or reads this differently, then please contact me.

James Gudgeon was in Hanley, Stoke in 1851 with his wife Elizabeth from Ireland. and their two children. There were two lodgers Andrew Dealy, 26 & Stephen Dealy, 16 both from Ireland (they were probably brothers of Elizabeth).

Emigration during the Irish famine years of 1845 to 1850 was to England, Scotland, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Families en masse did not emigrate, younger members of it did. So much so that emigration almost became a rite of passage, as evidenced by the data that show that, unlike similar emigration throughout world history, women emigrated just as often, just as early, and in the same numbers as men. The emigrant started a new life in a new land, sent remittances back to his/her family in Ireland which, in turn, allowed another member of the family to emigrate. (Wikipedia)

    Summary

James Gudgeon born in 1826 in Benton, Yorkshire,(unsure) married Elizabeth Daly (from Ireland) in Stoke on Trent 1848. James Gudgeon died in Stoke on Trent 1862. Their children were John (b.1848) , Catherine, James and Isabella.

After the death of James Gudgeon in 1862, Elizabeth remarried to William Disley, in 1863, who returned to Standish with his new family.

John, the son of James Gudgeon and Elizabeth Daly, married Jane Wilding in 1870 and their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1871. The Wilding family were all miners from Shevington.

It was their daughter Elizabeth that married John James Hodcroft who were the parents of my grandmother Clara Ellen Hodcroft.

Throughout this family line, the Gudgeon males were all coal miners.

    Surname origin: Dealy, Daley

The modern Anglicised versions of the ancient Gaelic family name Ua Dalaigh or O'Dalaigh, pronounced "O'Dhaulee," came about as a result of laws, designed by the English rulers, which outlawed Gaelic names.

In many cases the Anglicised forms were actually closely related to the basic Gaelic surnames minus the "Macs" or the "O's" as in the case of the name Daly.

Families of this name all originated in County Galway, and in Britain there are a large number of Deeleys in Birmingham. Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Deely, Daley, Dealy, etc.. The surname dates back to the mid 16th Century.
