Gerard Whitmore 1924 - 1988
About the times
Born 6 years after the
end of the First World War into troubled times, aged 2 during
the General Strike, when miners (including his father) were
out for several months, taken to Stainforth, near Doncaster
in 1926/7 at about 3 years old, so that his father could
get work during the depression years of the late 20's and
beyond. Gerard moved back to Standish to live with his aunties
Hodcroft who lived in High Street, Standish, for the duration
of the war and after.

Rationing continued
for 14 years until 1954, when meat was finally de-rationed. |

Gerry as he was known,
was born 04 August, 1924 at 131 Preston Road, Standish. His father was Robert
Whitmore and his mother Clara Ellen Hodcroft. |

Marriage of Gerard Whitmore
Gerard Whitmore married
in 1952 to Edna Glover at St. Maries R.C. Church in Standish
and lived initially in rented accommodation in Primrose
Lane, moving to a council flat in Almond Brook Road about
1957.
As times got better in
the late 60's and 70's he sold the motorbike ( a BSA
Bantam) and bought a car (Austin A40) and
later a house in Hodges Street, Wigan.
Chisnall Hall Colliery - 1953
He worked mainly in the coal industry, Planned Maintenance
dept. in the 1950's at Chisnall Hall Colliery, then Method Study at
Walkden Yard and Anderton House, Lowton from the 1960's till taking
voluntary redundancy in 1984.
Between the years 1968 - 70 he also had
a part-time job as Storeman at the Charnock Richard motorway
service station.
Throughout his life there
always were strong connections and weekly visits to the
Hodcrofts (sisters of his mother) who effectivly brought
him up in his teen years. It was after one of these visits
that he died of a heart attack in Standish on the 21 March,
1988.
