Chute Message Board Posting, May 12, 2012

"My mum is a 4th generation CHUTE living in Fiji. She's a descendant of John Chute who was sent to Fiji in the early 1900's I believe. One of her brothers, Winston, used to keep in touch with the extended family in Cork, Ireland but he has now passed on and no one else has any other contacts for the Chute family. Can anyone help me. There are a few of us now living in the UK who are descendant of this one JOHN CHUTE."

Note    N98-2002         Back to Index        Back to Ezekiel Jewett, Sr. and Martha Thurston Jewett.

Notes on Ezekiel Jewett, Sr. and Martha Thurston Jewett:

"Ezekiel Jewett ... came into possession of his fathers farm in Boxford and there lived and raised his large family. It seems he owned lands in other places. From old deeds in possession of his descendants, and from the records, it appears he owned several tracts of land in Rindge, N.H., where some of his children later made their homes. In The History of Winchendon, Mass., we find, March 16, 1754, Ezekial Jewett enters his claim for one of the first settlers. He was active in settling Boxford and his name often appears on the old records of that town, i.e., Committee for fixing town line headed by Ezecal Jueat. The town was enlarged by land being purchased by certain men, among whom was Ezekiel Jewett, etc.

He was a soldier in the Indian and French wars.

Mr. Jewett died in the fall of 1775 and four years later his heirs sold to Deacon James Chute, of Rowley, who came into possession, upon the widows death. Deacon Chute was connected with the family, his wifes sister having married Rev. David Jewett, one of the heirs. (Blodgette).

His will dated March 31, 1775, proved Nov 7, 1775, mentions: himself as of Boxford, wife Martha; sons Ezekiel, Stephen, Jonathan, Rev. David; daughters Martha Brown (wife of John Brown of Monson) and her children (unnamed), Hannah Woods children; Hepzibah Chaplin, wife of John Chaplin; Sarah Hale; Lydia, wife of Elokanan Winchester (of Brookline); four children of eldest son Thomas, deceased viz., Daniel; Hannah Snow; Sarah Poor and Enoch; trusty friend Joseph Hale junior of Boxford to be executor. His widow Marthas will mentions same children. (EIHC)

"Thomas Jewett was born in Rowley, Mass., Sept 20, bapt Oct 28, 1666. (Thomas Jewett son of Ezekiel & Faith borne September the twentyeth. Rowley Record).

He lived in Rowley until 1703 and then moved to Boxford, Mass and settled on a tract of land owned by his father but which subsequently came into his possession by will of his father dated 1723 and recorded in the Essex Probate Registry.

He was a tithing man of Boxford 1703-41, fence viewer 1704-52, chosen for the grand jury 1706 and was town clerk 1710 and 1721.

Sept 12, 1716, the town agreed with Thomas Jewett to teach Scoul for writing, reading and arithmetick to the 6 parts of ye town, ye town is for to give him forty shillings per month for ye six months and convenient diet and lodgings. (History of Boxford).

He died in Boxford May 6, 1731.

1Definition of "Tithing Man": An act of the General Court passed on November 3, 1675, "the selectmen of every town shall choose some sober and discrete persons to be authorized from the County Court, each of whom shall take charge of ten or twelve families of his neighborhood, and shall diligently inspect them, and present the names of such persons as transgressed the law, receiving as compensation for their services one third of the fines allowed, if faithful in the discharge of their duty, otherwise to be liable to the same fine as the unlicensed houses. The selectmen ordered that these men be notified to inspect their precinct as the law directed "for the preuentinge of disorders in private and unlicensed house of entertainment."

On May 24 and October 10, 1677, and on October 15, 1679 the duties of the Tithingmen were increased and in 1679 they were to be chosen annually. On February 4, 1679 a fine of 40 shillings was decreed for those that refused to serve. It was their duty to seize liquors sold without license, and also "to present the names of all single persons that live under family government, stubborn and disorderly children & servants, night walkers, typlers, saboath breakers, by night or by day, & such as absent themselves from the public worship of God on the Lords dayes, or whatever the course or practise of any person or persons whatsoeuer tending to debauchery, irreligion, prophaness, & atheisme among us, wherein by omission of family government, nurture, & religious duties, & instruction of children & servants, or idleness, profligat, uncivill, or rude practises of any sort."

Note: This history pertains to Chelsea, and may be slightly different in the Town of Boxford. However, this presents a general definition of these two positions in Colonial America.

2Definition of "Fence Viewer": "Each year, New England towns appointed a variety of minor officials. One of these offices was that of fence viewer, who was responsible for inspecting each resident's allotted portion of the common fence and any particular [individual] plots to see that regulations were followed.

The fence viewer is not a surveyor and is not concerned with the location of a line. He, or the board of two or three, looks at the line between neighbors to decide who takes care of his half. An attempt is made to divide the responsibility equally, as fencing over rock ledge is more difficult than fencing meadowland. The rule was that a line fence must be "hog tight and horse high." Good fences did make good neighbors, but good neighbors made good fences, and back when everybody had livestock it was equally important either way."

Note    N98-2006         Back to Index        Back to Burton Elbert Chute, and Mary Frances Hughes Chute.

Notes on Burton Elbert Chute, and Mary Frances Hughes Chute:

Biographical Details

"Details: He was a postal worker who was active in union business. Along with his wife, he was a very devoted and energetic church member and deacon, and he helped to found a black church in the neighborhood of Homewood. Both Burton and his wife were also civil rights marchers, and Burton was present for Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington. He was also a pacifist, and never discussed his war experiences. He loved his wife deeply, and when she died when his children were in their teens, he fell apart and the household disintegrated.

Her biography: She met him when she was working at a firm called Dravo in Pittsburgh. She involved him in her church group and the romance proceeded from there. She was a very kind, warm woman with a sense of humor who loved teaching Sunday School and cooking and reading. A bit overweight, she died of a sudden massive heart attack at age 46, leaving her husband and children bereft.

Sources: I have the birth and death certificates of my mother, Mary Frances Hughes, and I consulted them to make sure I was absolutely correct, even though this record documents my parents.

Further comments or additional information:I have only entered data in the fields that needed updating. I am the daughter, Susan Lee Chute. I am a librarian who supervised the Art and Picture Collections of The New York Public Library until 2011. I was also a theatrical lighting designer. I hold an MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Michigan, and an M.L.I.S. from Pratt Institute."

Note    N98-2010         Back to Index        Back to Robert A. ("Robbie") Calder, Jr. and Edna Lucy Chute Calder.

Notes on Robert A. ("Robbie") Calder, Jr. and Edna Lucy Chute Calder:

The first child listed in George M. Chute Jr.'s supplement was known or identified as either "Robert A. Chute", or "Roberta Chute", as the birth record listed the child as a girl. Robert A. or Roberta does not exist. The explanation is below:

"Robert A Calder III does not exist. My mother is Harriet Calder which is listed as his sibling. The problem is that there was a mixup on birth certificates and my mother was listed as Robert A Calder which was actually her fathers name. When she was older and looking for a copy of her birth certificate they realized the error and corrected."

Note    N98-2012         Back to Index        Back to Minerva Jane ("Merva") Hull.

Notes on Minerva Jane ("Merva) Hull:
Minerva Jane ("Merva") Hull. "Merva was an artist through and through, and deeply appreciated all of nature's beauty, often seeing the essence of things that others did not. She marveled at the billowing clouds, the swaying field grasses, and the exquisite colors and composition of flowers, trees and sky." Photo courtesy of the Hull family.

"It is with great sadness that the family of Minerva Jane Hull announces her peaceful passing at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on July 31, 2013, two years after her diagnosis with cancer. Born in Millville, NB, Minerva (Merva) was the daughter of Sadie (Chute) and Lester Hull.

She graduated from Millville Superior School in 1954 and then studied nursing at the Victoria Public Hospital Nursing School in Fredericton. After her training, she worked as a registered nurse in Fredericton and Saint John, NB, Welland, Ontario, and the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.

Merva left Montreal and returned to New Brunswick to be with her aging parents. During this time she set up a shop in St. Andrews, called "The Chickadee Gift Shop" where she sold local artisan products and her own line of silk scarves and earrings. Merva had so many rich talents, loves and hobbies including the design and creation of her hand-dyed silk scarf collections, practicing photography, and collecting all manner of antiques (furniture, jewelry, dishes and fabrics). She also loved music and had a natural and beautiful touch on the piano. Merva was an artist through and through, and deeply appreciated all of nature's beauty, often seeing the essence of things that others did not. She marveled at the billowing clouds, the swaying field grasses, and the exquisite colors and composition of flowers, trees and sky.

Merva cherished her family, and delighted in the development and accomplishments of her nieces and nephews; and in recent years her grand-nieces and nephews. She loved family gatherings and special occasions, and was always keenly interested in keeping in touch with family, both close and extended. Merva was an avid student of the history and genealogy of the Hulls and Chutes, and took great pleasure in the anecdotes and biographies of her family's ancestors.

Her family will miss her greatly. She is survived by her sisters, Kerry Hull and Jacqueline (Jackie) Meldrum, both of Fredericton, NB; her brothers Dale Hull (Judy) of Manotick, Ontario and Norman Hull (Marina) of Millville, NB; as well as a bounty of nieces: Sharon Price, Sonya Hull, Andrea Hull, Kristin Hull-Millar, Meghan Hull-Jacquin, Ginger Hull, and Heather Hull; and nephews Graydon Tranquilla, Stephen Tranquilla and Greg Hull.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the kind and caring physicians and nurses in the Palliative Care Unit of the Dr. Everett Chalmers hospital during these final weeks. Visitation will be held at the Millville United Baptist Church, 1469 Route 605, Millville, NB on Sunday, August 4, 2013 from 2 pm to the hour of the funeral service at 3 pm with nephew Stephen Tranquilla officiating.

Interment at the Millville Cemetery. A reception will be held at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Millville Cemetery Fund or the Louise Breau Memorial Medical Trust Fund. Arrangements by Flewelling Funeral Home, Nackawic, NB.

Note    N98-2017          Back to Index        Back to Jeremiah Goodridge and Mary Adams Goodridge.

Notes on Jeremiah Goodridge and Mary Adams Goodridge:

There is a discrepancy on the parentage of the son, Philip, listed here. Our primary source, Goodrich Family Association, Org., which cites Lafayette, Wallace Case M.D., The Goodrich Family in America, page 357, identifies this Philip as having married a Mehitable Woodman. We had already recorded a Philip Goodridge and Mehitable Woodman. In that record, another source (Descendants of Philip Goodridge & Mehitable Woodman identified that Philip as the son of Joseph Goodridge and Margaret Moores.

Unfortunately, I don't see citations for that identification - which doesn't mean it's inaccurate, only that I don't see a source for it yet. Meanwhile, another family genealogical database, Ancestry of Robert Roy and Related Families, which shows Philip as the son of Jeremiah and Mary Adams as our website does, cites the following:

It's a little out of our scope to resolve the discrepancy, so we welcome any researchers focusing on the Goodrich-Goodridge family to update us on the latest research on Philip Goodridge and Mehitable Woodman. Meanwhile, I will follow the line listed in the Goodrich Family in America and related sources.

Notes on John Adams and [Given name unknown] Woodman Adams:

Children of ROBERT ADAMS and his wife Eleanor; res.Newbury, Mass.

"JOHN8, b. in England, date unknown. He is said to have come to America with his father, and it has been supposed that he married a Miss Woodman, and was the father of Archelaus of Salisbury; but the probate records show that Archelaus of Salisbury was the son of Lieut. John, and grandson of "William of Ipswich."

He appears to have been living in 1680, when his father's will was made, and yet is passed over with a simple bequest of 20 lbs, no wife or children being alluded to, from which it may fairly be inferred that he was unmarried, and left, no issue. Records were kept, and handed down of all the children of Sergt. Abraham, and of Jacob, the only sons apparently who married and left descendants."

Notes on Thomas Walker and Abigail Philbrook Walker:

"Thomas Walker, sent to New England with other soldiers in the service of England during the French war, found opportunity to desert, and located somewhere in eastern Massachusetts or New Hampshire. He m. Abigail Philbrook, sister to Benjamin Philbrook, the tything-man ... Before coming to Sutton to live Thomas Walker served in the Revolutionary war and his son George served with him some portion of the time. The Thomas Walker named among the soldiers from Sutton in the War of 1812 is supposed to be his son. Thomas Walker, Sr. d. in Sutton, 1822, at the great age of 103 years. Farmer and Moores Gazetteer, printed in 1823, very shortly after Mr. Walkers death, may be supposed to be correct in the notice given of him under the head of Sutton. The remarkable circumstance of a man dying at that great age would naturally have led to some inquiry as to antecedents and origin, and as Farmer and Moore were at that very time making up their Gazetteer, it is not strange that Mr. Walkers case should have been reported to them among the Sutton items. The book says that he served in the French war, and in the Revolutionary war, and was in several important battles Saratoga, White Plains and Brandywine. Mr. Walkers wife also lived to a great age. She died in the winter of 1826 at the house of Samuel Kezar, in the north-west part of Sutton."

Notes on Phineas Stevens and Mehitable Philbrook Stevens:

"Ensign Phineas Stevens came from Hampstead to Sutton in 1772. He was a man of great bodily strength, very stout and laborious, and much in the habit of carrying heavy loads upon his shoulders. In this way he conveyed the boards to cover his barn more than a mile, through the property, and brought up a large family, and was much respected as a citizen and as a neighbor. In the latter part of his life he was much afflicted with rheumatism, a natural result, it may be supposed, of his taxing his strength so severely in his earlier years. He, however, lived to the age of 90 years. He lived in the south part of town."

Notes on Clarence Elton Chute and Lillian Frances Olson Chute:

"Lillian loved to play cards, bingo & slot machines. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Lillian never remarried after Clarence passed away.

Sources: http://www. archives.com/member/Default.aspx?_=CemeteryRecordView&info.type=

The Social Security Index has his (Clarence's) birthdate listed as 1904. On most every website I have found Clarence Chute's birthdate listed incorrectly. Per my Great-Aunt Lillian, in her own writing, Clarence's birthdate was 18 Sep 1904 and not 1903. Clarence & Lillian lived in Chicago but moved to Daytona Beach FL in the 1960's. This is where Clarence passed away. I am told by my father Edward William Chute that Lillian then took Clarence back to Chicago for burial. Per the cemetery paperwork he had in his hand & his recollection of that time.

Lillian Chute was cremated & laid to rest in the waters of Daytona FL."

Notes on Donald E. Chute and Helen A. Salser Chute:

Letter from Juanita Chutes Miller to her daughter Sharon, date unknown

"Sharon/Ronald, I was told by my father George Chutes, that his brother Donald (Don) went hunting with a man family friend and Don was never seen again by anyone. The man hunter friend said that they went into two different directions while hunting and he never came back. There was very little explanation about it from anyone.

My father always wanted to have it investigated. But you had to pay for it back then and he could not afford it. My father had many ideas of what took place but had no proof.

No trace of him was ever found. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Sincerely, Juanita Chutes Miller

Helen Salser's grandson, Gene LaPosta weighed in with more details:

"Helen A Salser was my Grandmother and had a child Francis Mae while married to Donald Chutes. They also had another son Harold E 1-16-19, and Ruth Ann 9-2-17. Then from all all family history Donald Chutes ceased to exist and my Grandmother lived with (married?) George William Boyce or as he was known to my family William Brown and had their own family of 5 starting in 1923. My uncle Harold and Aunt Ruth always thought their father met foul play at their step fathers hand. So far I can find no record of death or divorce for Donald Chutes."
