Notes for ERASMUS TUCKER:
BIOGRAPHY: On 6th August 1862 Military Burial Services were held for Erasmus Tucker who was killed in Battle near Montevallo, Missouri. Erasmus was born July of 1839 in Johnson County, Missouri to Greenup and Elizabeth (Woodson) Tucker formerly of Henry County, Kentucky. Erasmus moved with his Parents to Benton County, Missouri prior to 1840 and to Little Osage Twp, in Vernon County, Missouri prior to 1850. In the spring of 1862 Erasmus was recruited into the K&B MR unit of the Confederate Army stationed near Montevallo, Missouri under the Command of Colonel Coffee. On the 5th of August 1862 his Unit encountered and surrounded in the Town of Montevallo, a Union reconnaissance detachment under the leadership of Colonel Barstow from Ft.Scott, Kansas. After refusing and order to "Surrender" the Union detachment broke free and in the ensuing running gun battle, Erasmus Tucker was shot and killed. He was pre-deceased by his Father Greenup Tucker who died 21 March 1852. Erasmus was survived by his Mother Elizabeth (Woodson) Tucker and his Maternal Grandmother Judith Woodson, both of Vernon County, Missouri, his Brothers Preston Walker Tucker of Benton County,MO,Greenup M. Tucker and William B. Tucker both of Vernon County,MO and George W. Tucker and Sisters Amanda (Tucker) Smith of Benton CO and Mary A. (Tucker) Foland of Vernon CO,MO as well as numerous Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins. Burial took place in the Confederate Mass Grave at Montevallo, Missouri. (A factual reconstruction of a fictional obituary.)

BIOGRAPHY: In October of 2003 the mass Confederate Grave site in Montevallo Missouri was rededicated and comemorated with new markers. Lucinda Blankenship, Great Great Granddaughter of George W. Tucker was in attendance. Local people of the Town of Montevallo refer to this incident as the "Battle of Horse Creek", said Creek of the same Name still exists today.

BIOGRAPHY: Vernon County History relates a somewhat different Story of this account. The local History states that 16 green recruits of which Erasmus Tucker was one of these 16, were enroute to Col. Coffee's Campsite when they were attacked by a Union Detachment numbering 500 or more and the Confederate recruits had no chance for survival during the exchange and reports were that bodies were scattered over a mile's distance.

Generation No. 9

37. PRESTON WALKER9 TUCKER (ELIZABETH8 WOODSON, JOSEPH "JESSE"7, SHADRACH #16, WILLIAM5, BENJAMIN4, COL. ROBERT3, DR. JOHN2, DR. ALEXANDER1) was born September 25, 1825 in Henry County, KY, and died February 20, 1897 in Cole Camp, Benton CO.MO. He married ELMINA NICHOLS August 03, 1852 in Henry County, Missouri, daughter of ALBERT NICHOLS and RACHAEL MILLER. She was born 1839 in Benton Co.MO, and died March 09, 1873 in Benton Co.MO.

Notes for PRESTON WALKER TUCKER:
BIOGRAPHY: Elmina Nichols Tucker, Wife of Preston W. Tucker and Mother of their seven children was in actuality Preston's second Wife. Preston was first married to Martha J. who I believe to be Martha J. Nichols, older Sister of Elmina. Martha Was born around 1835 and of this union there was one Child, a Daughter named Samantha, date of birth 1 September 1851 and Died that same day. Her Mother Martha died the day after on 2 September 1851. Martha's age given as 16 years 1 month and 8 days.

BIOGRAPHY: After Elmina's death in 1873 at the age of 33 years and 9 months, Preston Married again on 30 July 1875 to Elizabeth Alfrietta Proctor, there was a child of this Union named Edna and Preston's probate bears this out. 1880 census shows Edna at age 4 months. After Preston's death in 1897, Elizabeth remarried.

BIOGRAPHY: Preston Walker Tucker was a leading Citizen in the Town of Cole Camp, engaging in livestock trading, a land owner and speculator and very active in Town affairs. He donated the land where the Freund High School was built and in the late 1950's when the Town decided to tear Freund school down Tucker descendants were requested to sign affadavits disallowing ownership so the Town could transfer clear title to the new owner,Louis Priesmeyer.

BIOGRAPHY: Civil War Service: Sgt. Benton County Home Guards B CO. Also known as "The German Regiment". Saw action at the Battle Of Cole Camp that took place in the early morning hours of June 19th 1861 when a group of Warsaw Confederates attacked the Home Guard in their sleep while billeted in the Heisterberg and Harms Farms. Having only mustered in six day's earlier, and being surprised, confusion ensued and 80 to 90 men were killed. They were very "Green" and some were only armed with pitchforks and butcher knives. Family stories have it that Preston implored his men to "Hold Steady" but to no avail and as a result Preston was taken Prisoner. It is not quite certain how or why he was released. Home Guard records show that he lost personal Horse and Gun as a result of being captured. Home Guard enlistment was for a period of 90 day's and after his time was served he re-enlisted Missouri State Militia CO E.7th Cavalry. Mustering out records for him are not verifiable but the 7th did not muster out until sometime in 1865. Many of the Men killed at the Battle Of Cole Camp are buried in a Mass Grave located in the Union Cemetery,Cole Camp, Benton County Missouri.

iv. SHADRACK W. TUCKER, b. 1860, Benton Co.MO; d. Unknown, ?.

Notes for SHADRACK W. TUCKER:
BIOGRAPHY: Shadrach W. Tucker is somewhat of a "Mystery" to myself and other living Tucker descendants. The Book of Cole Camp History mentions him along with other brothers and he is shown and listed in Census. The only living Tucker descendant that has any information on Shadrach has stated that at one point in time Shadrach announced to the Family that he intended to "Sail around the Cape" and was never heard from again, there is no proof to acknowledge or dispell this statement. There is a written account in my possesion detailing an episode where Greenup Albert and Shadrach (known as "Shade" to Friends and Family members were Deputized in 1878 to try and apprehend a Gang of Thieves, 5 or 6 is the story. Shade managed to Kill one of the Thieves as well as Greenup another, after Greenup and Shade had been attacked in the Timber surrounding Cole Camp. Greenup was shot in the left lower leg during the running gun battle, they were only armed with Muzzelloaders and the thieves were armed with 44.Cal. Handguns, putting Shade and Greenup at a distinct disadvantage. This written account would substantiate that Shade was still in Cole Camp in 1878 at the age of 18. When Shades Father Preston Walker Tucker passed on in 1897 his Will and Probate records indicate that Shadrach never claimed his inheritance.

She was born 1841, and died Unknown in Prob. Cole Camp, Benton Co.MO.

Notes for GEORGE WILLIAM TUCKER:
BIOGRAPHY: Family History has it that George W. Tucker was Killed in the War,this is believed to be true. There are several G.W. Tucker's who fought on both the Confederate and Union sides and at this time proof is not certain as to which. Lucinda Blankenship, Great Great Granddaughter of G.W. and Sarah believes as I do that he fought on the Confederate side, but then his older brother Preston W. Tucker fought Union and their youngest brother Erasmus fought Confederate and is buried in the Confederate Mass Grave at Montevallo, Missouri. When Sarah gave birth to their Son William Clarence she passed away at childbirth or shortly there after. When George left for War William went to live with his Grandmother Elizabeth wife of: Greenup Tucker and his Great Grandmother Sarah Judith(Ford)Woodson residing at this time in Horton, Vernon County, Missouri.

ALEXANDER1) was born July 07, 1818 in Logan County, Kentucky, and died August 18, 1850 in Gold Fields, Placerville, ElDorado CO, CA. He married ZERELDA ELIZABETH COLE December 28, 1841 in Stampin Ground, Scott CO, KY. She was born January 29, 1825 in Black Horse Tavern, Woodford CO, KY, and died February 10, 1911 in Oklahoma City, Cleveland CO, Oklahoma.

Notes for ROBERT SALEE JAMES:
BIOGRAPHY: Robert worked his father and Mother's farm until their death. Robert studied the Ministry and was ordained a Baptist Minister in 1839. He attended Georgetown College in Kentucky and while in school met and, in 1841 married Zerelda Elizabeth "Zee" Cole who was a student in a catholic convent in lexington Kentucky. Robert graduated in June 1843 and received a Master of Arts Degree in 1847. Robert worked his farm with seven faithful Negro servants and served God on Sunday as a Preacher, but was never paid for preaching.

BIOGRAPHY: Robert and Zee moved to Clay County, Missouri, where Robert became the Pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church. They purchased a Farm located near Excelsior Springs, Clay County, Missouri. Two of the Churches he founded are still in existence today. They are the Providence Baptist Church in Clay County Missouri and the Pisgah Baptist Church near Excelsior Sorings Missouri. Robert was also one of the founders and a trustee of the William Jewell College in Liberty Missouri. His wife, Zerelda, told she saw her Husband Baptise as many as 65 people on one occasion.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1850, Robert journeyed to California to find Gold and Preach to the miner's for a year. His son Jesse pleaded with his father not to go. It took four months to get to California and just three weeks later Robert was dead.

BIOGRAPHY: It was said by Zerelda, that had not Robert gone to the gold fields of California, Frank and Jesse would not have had their violent histories. Robert is buried in an unmarked grave near Placerville, El Dorado County, California.

Notes for ZERELDA ELIZABETH COLE:
BIOGRAPHY: Daughter of James Cole and Sallie Lindsay.

BIOGRAPHY: At age fourteen (1839) Zerelda entered St. Catherine's Academy for women in Lexington kentucky. She met Robert Salee James at a Religious Revival. They Married two years later in 1841.

BIOGRAPHY: After Robert died in 1850, Zerelda married Benjamin Simms. From this Marriage came several notes of interest. Frances Peters Innskeeper, a niece of benjamin Simms, married Coleman Purcell Younger of Clay County Missouri and moved to San Jose, California. A nephew, named for the Younger, became the outlaw Cole Younger. Mary, the younger Sister of Frances married Marin Ringo and also went to California. Their Son Jon Peters, was the "Johnny Ringo" of Tombstone Arizona fame. Zerelda was therefore, by marriage, the Great Aunt of the Younger's and Ringo and her Son's Cousins, but only by Marriage. Adaline Younger half-Sister to Coleman Purcell Younger, married James Lewis Dalton, becoming the Mother of Bob, Grant, and Emmett, the core of the famous Dalton Gang. This made the "James" boy's, the Younger's, Ringo and the Dalton's distant Cousins.

BIOGRAPHY: Bruce Younger, brother to Adaline and half brother to Coleman, Married Myra Belle (Shirley) Reed in California, the Widow of the Missouri Outlaw Jim Reed who was killed during a bank robbery. What happened to the marriage, or to Bruce, is unknown as Myra later married Sam Starr, a Cherokee Indian in Oklahoma. Myra was better known as "Belle Starr".

BIOGRAPHY: When Benjamin Simms died, Zerelda then Married Dr. Reuben Samuel. She had four children by Reuben.

BIOGRAPHY: Zerelda's hand was blown off and her youngest child (Archie-8 years old) was killed by a bomb that was thrown into her home at night by Pinkerton Detectives who were seeking to kill or capture her "outlaw" Son's. For this cowardly deed, Zerelda and her family were given a lifetime pass on the railroad. She made good use of the pass. When she couldn't find enough of her Family who wanted to travel, she would "adopt" neighbors as Family. They say she had a comic spirit always at hand.

BIOGRAPHY: Zerelda was a strong, domineering Woman very outspoken and fiercely protective of her surviving Children( 4 of eight). She had the size to back it up also at 5'8" and over 200 pounds and she had married and buried 3 Husbands! Zerelda died while returning from a visit to her Son Frank in Oklahoma. They took her off the train in Oklahoma City and later transferred her to Kearney Missouri where she was placed to rest.

49. NANCY GARDNER9 JAMES (MARY POLLY8 POOR, ELIZABETH WOODSON7 MIMMS, ELIZABETH6 WOODSON, ROBERT5, BENJAMIN4, COL. ROBERT3, DR. JOHN2, DR. ALEXANDER1) was born September 13, 1821. She married GEORGE BURNS HITE. He was born January 29, 1821, and died November 24, 1891.

Notes for NANCY GARDNER JAMES:
BIOGRAPHY: Nancy Gardner James, the sister to the James brothers father and the Wife of George Burns Hite was Jesse and Frank's Aunt. The Hite home near Adairville, Logan County Kentucky, was a favorite refuge for the James Gang. Jesse continued to suffer from the lung wound he received while attempting to surrender as the Civil War came to an end. He learned of a Doctor Eve, in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, who specialized in treating such wounds. Jesse had joined the Anderson Gang at the age of 17. After the Gang's bold robbery of Clay County Savings Bank in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri on 13 February 1866, Jesse along with his brother Frank and the Younger brother's took refuge at the home of George and Nancy. From there, Jesse sought treatment from Dr. Eve and recuperated for several months. As he regained strength, and by now needing money, Jesse along with Frank James, Cole Younger, Jim White, John Jarret and George Shephard, who had all served together with Quantrill during the Civil war, chose to rob the Southern Deposit Bank of Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky on 20 March 1868. Somewhat more confident from their success they had in their first bank robbery in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri, the Gang took between 9 and 14 thousand dollars and once more took refuse at the Hite home. The James's always considered them-selves Missouri-Indian Teritory folks, though they had major ties to Fort Scott.

52. GREENUP ALBERT10 TUCKER (PRESTON WALKER9, ELIZABETH8 WOODSON, JOSEPH "JESSE"7, SHADRACH #16, WILLIAM5, BENJAMIN4, COL. ROBERT3, DR. JOHN2, DR. ALEXANDER1) was born August 29, 1855 in Cole Camp, Benton CO.MO, and died November 07, 1933 in Cole Camp, Benton CO.MO. He married LILLIAN ORLIVA ROUSE October 26, 1875 in Cole Camp, Benton CO.MO, daughter of ALONZO ROUSE and REBECCA CANFIELD. She was born March 27, 1859 in Jefferson CO, Watertown N.Y., and died April 17, 1952 in Cole Camp, Benton CO.MO.

Notes for GREENUP ALBERT TUCKER:
BIOGRAPHY: Greenup Albert Tucker, livestock trader, landowner of great account and leading Town Citizen of Cole Camp, Missouri was a self taught Veterinarian and practiced that trade nearly all his life. But he is probably best known thru out Pettis and Benton Counties of the State of Missouri as a "Lawman". Having started his career in the mid 1870's he was frequently Deputized to perform various actions that the local authorities felt were too risky for them to undertake. Known as and chronicled in local newspapers as a "Notorious Fighter", he was all to frequently involved in gunplay, fisticuffs and the like, many men came from far and wide just to challenge him. There are several documented accounts of gun play ending in loss of life, and in fact he himself was shot on more than one occasion even stabbed six times by a man while he was dancing with his Wife Lillian at the Harm's Hall in Cole Camp in 1876.

BIOGRAPHY: Served as Town Alderman and was instrumental along with other Alderman for the Incorporation of the Town of Cole Camp there-by moving the City in to 4th class status. They built the first Cole Camp Jail as Greenup was Town Marshall by that time, a posistion that he held till he retired in 1901. Family history abounds with stories of him, yet he and Lillian managed to raise three Son's all of which were true Gentlemen. Great Grandmother Lillian probably had much to do with that as she was born of a New York family (Rouse) and manners, good grooming and proper dress were always at the top of her priorites. Greenup lived until the age of 78 and died November 7, 1933, not long before his death he was "Gored" by a young Bull who took him to the ground and eventually the complications of this attack led to his demise. There seems to be some degree of Irony to this account, he was able to survive all the life threatening adventures in his life only to have this happen, but then again they say he had no fear of anything, except maybe Lillian.

BIOGRAPHY: **Note** Greenup and Lillian share one common gravestone, with just the year of birth and death for each. The year for birth and death for Greenup reads "1856-1934" each is exactly one year higher than the actual years of "1855-1933" there is no explanation for this.

Notes for LILLIAN ORLIVA ROUSE:
BIOGRAPHY: Arrived in Cole Camp Missouri, October of 1866 with other Family members at the age of five years. Great Grandmother Lillian was known thru out the Cole Camp area as being very much a "Lady". According to her Great Granddaughter Betty (Tucker) Mayfield, Lillian was very different from the other Women of her area and time, very Prim and Proper, and very eleagant in her mannerisims and way's and alway's very much a "good" Mother to her Children. Along with raising 3 Son's of her own, she and Great Grandfather,Al, raised as many as 5 other various Family members. She was very active in Town and Church activities, and very highly respected in her Community. She attained the age of ninety three years and was buried next to her husband in Cole Camp Cemetery, Cole Camp, Missouri.

She married JESSE WOODSON JAMES April 24, 1874 in Kearney, Clay County, Missouri, son of ROBERT JAMES and ZERELDA COLE. He was born September 05, 1847 in Kearney, Clay County, Missouri, and died April 03, 1882 in St.Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri.

BIOGRAPHY: Zerelda Amanda Mimms and Husband Jesse Woodson James were first Cousins.

Record Change: December 02, 2003

Notes for JESSE WOODSON JAMES:
BIOGRAPHY: "From an Article published in the Pony Express Historical Society"

BIOGRAPHY: "Of all the world's legendary characters", few have attracted world-wide fascination like the Outlaw, Jesse James. Some call him America's Robin Hood, while others see him as a cold blooded killer. Perhaps he was all of these things. Some people say it was the cruel treatment from Union Soldiers that turned Frank and Jesse to a life of crime during the Civil War. Certainly during the War years they learned to kill while riding with William Quantrill and "Bloody" Bill Anderson.

BIOGRAPHY: After the War, Jesse was wounded while surrendering. Within a year, Frank and Jesse are believed to have pulled off the first daylight bank robbery in peace time. They made off with $60,000 from the Liberty, Missouri Bank not far from their home, and one man was killed. For the next 15 years, the James boy's roamed throughout the U.S. robbing trains and Bank's of their gold, building a legend that was to live more than a century after Jesse's death.

BIOGRAPHY: Jesse married his own first Cousin, Zerelda Amanda Mimms after a nine year courtship and he called her "Zee" for short.

BIOGRAPHY: The Pinkerton Detective Agency was called in to help catch the famous desperadoes. Jesse reached his "Waterloo" in September, 1876, when his Gang, including the Younger brothers, took on the Bank at Northfield Minnesota. Within minutes the towns people returned fire. All except Frank and Jesse were either killed, wounded or captured. After the incident, Zerelda and Frank's Wife Anna Ralston tried to get them to take on a more normal life.

BIOGRAPHY: With a $10,000.00 reward on his head, Jesse moved to St. Joseph Missouri with his Family in the fall of 1881 to hide out. On Christmas Eve, Jesse and Zee moved their family into a small house atop a high hill overlooking St. Joseph. Living under the assumed name of Tom Howard, Jesse rented the House from a City Councilman for $14 a month. He attended Church, but did not work for a living.

BIOGRAPHY: During the winter of 1882, Jesse tried to buy a small farm in Nebraska. But in April, he was short of cash. All of his earlier Gang members were either dead or in prison, but Jesse recruited Bob and Charlie Ford to help him rob the Platte City Bank. The Ford boy's posed as Cousins of Jesse James, but actually were not related to Jesse at all. The $10,000.00 reward on Jesse proved to appealing. While Jesse stood on a chair in the Family home at 1318 Lafayette Street in St. Joseph to dust and straighten a picture, Bob and Charlie drew their Gun's. Bob Ford put an end to the James legend with a single bullet to the back of the head on April 3, 1882. The Ford Brother's attempted to collect the reward. Instead, they were charged with murder. They were arrested to hang, but were pardoned by Governor Tom Crittenden.

BIOGRAPHY: Two years later Charlie Ford committed Suicide and Bob Ford was himself killed in a bar room brawl in Creede, Colorado, in 1892.

BIOGRAPHY: Jesse Woodson James was a moral paradox. He was a good Father and family man, and was religious in his own way. Whether he stole from the rich and gave to the poor, or just kept it all, has never been decided. Jesse James died in 1882, but the legend of Jesse James continues more than a century beyond his death. Today Jesse and Frank James are among the best known Americans in the world.

59. JESSE WOODSON10 JAMES (ROBERT SALEE9, MARY POLLY8 POOR, ELIZABETH WOODSON7 MIMMS, ELIZABETH6 WOODSON, ROBERT5, BENJAMIN4, COL. ROBERT3, DR. JOHN2, DR. ALEXANDER1) was born September 05, 1847 in Kearney, Clay County, Missouri, and died April 03, 1882 in St.Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. He married ZERELDA AMANDA MIMMS April 24, 1874 in Kearney, Clay County, Missouri, daughter of JOHN MIMMS and MARY JAMES. She was born July 21, 1845 in Logan County, Kentucky, and died November 13, 1900.
