He married SARAH WINSTON 1619 in Dorset, Dorsetshire, England, daughter of ISAAC WINSTON and MARY DABNEY. She was born 1590 in England, and died January 17, 1659/60 in Henrico Co., VA.

John went to school at St. John's College, Oxford, England and graduated a doctor in 1604. John became a surgeon working with Sir George Yeardley.
Just after their marriage, John and Sarah came to America on the ship "George", leaving England on 29 Jan 1619. The "George brought the first slaves to America, and John owned 6 of them. They homestead just up the river from Jamestown, Virginia.
Dr. Woodson, returning from a visit to a sick family, was killed in sight of his home. The Indians then attacked the home which was barred against them. His brave wife and a man named Ligon, a shoe maker, who happened to be there, killed a goodly number and repelled them, using an old gun as their only weapon. This gun, long in the possession of descendents, is now owned by the Virgina Historical Society.
The two sons of Dr. and Mrs. Woodson, John and Robert, had been hidden in a pit made for the purpose of keeping potatoes and were saved. From this incident their descendants for several generations were spoken of as "Potatoe Hole Woodsons."
From this time we have no records of John and Robert until 1697 when both are named among the tithables at "Curles", a plantation on the north side of the James River in Henrico County, a short distance above Fleur de Hundred. Then on June 5, 1727 Tarleton Woodson, the deed showing that the land was conveyed by deed dated June 8, 1674 by Nathaniel Bacon into Robert Woodson, Grandfather of the said Tarleton Woodson. Later this place became noted as the seat of the Randolph family. Soon after this date we find the Woodsons active and prominent in the history of Virginia. No doubt, loss of Court house records caused this gap.
Framed on the wall of the Clerk's office at Goochland is a remarkable old document. It is the original of the commission to the first justices, dated 1728 and signed by Governor William Gooch. Those named are: Thomas Randolph, John Fleming, William Mayo, John Woodson, Daniel Stonar, R. Salle, Tarton Fleming, Allen Coward, and Edward Scott. There also is an original bond signed by Peter Jefferson, father of the Author of the Declaration of Independence, and Arthur Hopkins.
When, in 1775, Committees of Safety were organized in various counties, who were to have virtual control of preparation for impending war, Goochland acted promptly and among the distinguished citizens were named John Woodson, Joseph Woodson and Matthew Woodson.
Captain Charles Woodson commanded a Company in the Revolutionary War. Tarlton Woodson was a Captain of the 10th Virginia Regiment in 1776, a Major in the 2nd Regiment 1777, and was taken prisoner by the British on Staten Island, August 22, 1777.
This story has come down through the family history: "Lord Cornwallis, on his way to Yorktown, while stopping in Goochland County, made "Dover", the home of Colonel John Woodson and his wife Dorothea Randolph and their son Major Josiah Woodson, his headquarters. To quite the mother's fear, Cornwallis kissed her baby, Mary Woodson, in her cradle. "Dover" was one of the most imposing homes of Colonial Virginia. One of its most attractive features was the lovely stairway.
Many other members of this family have held high places in their communities and government. There have been governors, senators, Judges, doctors, ministers, and other important positions. From generation to generation they have continued to marry into the families of the leading Colonist of that day.

David came with his parents to Missouri from Warren Co., Ky. The family settled near Palmyra in Marion County where the parents lived until their deaths.
David and Mary Ann (Polly/Ollie as she was called) lived in Audrain Co. for 12 years and then moved to Callaway Co., MO. His farm was well tended and well stocked with short horns.

Reuben had good common school advantages, and was brought up to the life of a farmer, which he followed. The first year after his marrage, Reuben remained on his father's farm. The next year Reuben and Mahala moved to the old Brodwater and Kidwell homestead. A year or two afterwards he bought the Casey farm, where he lived until March, 1882, when be bought his present place and moved to it. The farm was known as the M.K. Taylor farm, and contained 160 acres of fine land, and fairly well improved.

"AUSVASSE FARMER DIED ON TUESDAY
James Sloane Woodson had lived in Callaway County nearly all his life. James Sloane Woodson, 86 years old, died Tuesday night about 10:30 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. (Oliva Woodson) John D. Judy, northeast of Auxvasse.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. A. F. Larson, of Fulton, at Augusta Presbyterian Church, southwest of Shamrock at 11:00 o'clock on Thursday morning. Mr. (James) Woodson was a long time menber of the Masonic lodge at Shamrock.
Mr. (James) Woodson was born in Palmyra, Marion county, March 28, 1849, but had been a resident of northeast Callaway county the greater part of his life. His wife Harriet (Hendrix)Woodson, died a number of years ago, but he is survived by the following sons and daughters: W. (William) A. Woodson, and D. (David) R. (Rudy) Woodson, Bachelor; Louis, Shamrock; John Woodson, California; Mrs. (Olive Woodson) J. D. Robert worked his father's and mother's farm, assuming ownership until their death,
Robert studied the ministry and was ordained a Babtist Minister in 1839. He attended Georgetown College in Kentucky and while in school met and, in 1841, married Zerelda Elizabeth "Zee" Cole who was a student in a Catholic convent in Lexington, KY. Robert graduated in June 1843 and received a Master of Arts Degree in 1847. Robert worked his farm during the week with seven faithful Negro servants and served God on Sunday as a preacher, but was never paid for preaching.
Robert and Zee moved to Clay County, Mo. where Robert became the pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church. They bought a farm located near Excelsior Springs, Clay Co., Mo.
Two of the churches he founded are still in existence today. They are the Providence Babtist Church in Clay Co., Mo., and the Pisgah Babtist Church near Excelsior Springs, Mo. Robert was also one of the founders and a trustee of the William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
His wife, Zerelda, told she saw her husband baptize as many as 65 people on one occasion.
In 1850, Robert went to California to find gold and preach to the miners for a year. His son Jesse pleaded with his father not to go. It took four months to get there and just three weeks later, Robert was dead.
It was said by Zerelda, that had not Robert gone to the gold fields of California, Frank and Jesse would not have had their violent histories.
Robert is buried in an unmarked grave near Placerville, El Dorado Co., CA.

At age fourteen (1839) Zerelda entered St. Catherine's Academy for women in Lexington, Ky. She met Robert Sallee James at a religious revival. They married two years later in 1841.
After Robert died in 1850, Zerelda married Benjamin Simms. From this marriage came several notes of interest. Frances Peters Innskeeper, niece of Benjamin Simms, married Coleman Purcell Younger of Clay Co., and moved to San Jose, California. A nephew, named for the Younger, became the outlaw Cole Younger. Mary, the younger sister of Frances married Martin Ringo and also went to California. Their son, Jon Peters, was the "Jonny Ringo" of Tombstone, Arizona fame. Zerelda was therefore, by marriage, the Great Aunt of the Youngers and Ringo and her sons cousins, but only by marriage. Adaline Younger, half-sister to Coleman Purcell Younger, married James Lewis Dalton, becoming the mother of Bob, Grant, and Emmett, the core of the famous Dalton Gang. This made the James boys, the Youngers, Ringo and the Daltons distant cousins.
Bruce Younger, brother to Adaline and half-brother to Coleman, married Myra Belle (Shirley) Reed in California, the widow of the Missouri outlaw Jim Reed who was killed during a bank robbery. What happened to the marriage, or to Bruce, is unknown as Myra latter married Sam Starr, a Cherokee Indian in Oklahoma. Myra was better known as "Belle Starr".
When Benjamin died, Zerelda then married Dr. Reuben Samuel. She had four children by Reuben.
Zerelda's hand was blown off and her youngest child (Archie-8 years old) was killed by a bomb that was thrown into her home at night by Pinkerton detectives who were seeking to kill or capture her "outlaw" sons. For this cowardly deed, Zerelda's and her family were given a lifetime pass on the railroad. She made good use of the pass. When she couldn't find enough of her family she would "adopt" neighbors as family. They said she had a comic spirit always at hand.
Zerelda was strong, domineering, outspoken, and fiercely protective of her surviving children (4 of eight). Zerelda had the size to back it up--5'8" and over 200 lbs. She married and buried three husbands to boot!
Zerelda died while returning from a visit to her son Frank in Oklahoma. They took her off the train in Oklahoma City and later transferred her to Kearney where she was placed to rest.

Notes for ALEXANDER FRANKLIN JAMES:
Alexander Franklin "Frank" James was possibly the leader of the James Gang. In the summer of 1862 Frank joined "Bloody" Bill Anderson's gang at the age of 19. On parole as a member of the Confederate Rome Guard unit that fought at Wilson's Creek, he deserted or left because of illness. In June of 1874 he married Anna Ralston. After the Northfield, Minn. bank robbery, Frank tried to hide out but was caught and tried in Clay Co., MO. He was found not guilty. He then stood trial in Huntsville, Alabama. Again he was found not guilty.
Frank then moved to St. Louis, MO, where he worked as an usher, doorman, and bouncer at the Standard Theatre. On March 30, 1900, Frank James gave a testimonial performance at the very same theatre. He returned to the family farm in Kerney, Clay Co., MO and ran it as a museum the rest of his life. On February 15, 1915, Alexander Franklin James died of a heart attack in the very bed he was born in.
His family tried to hide or disguise his grave because they feared that his body would be dug up and experiments run on his brain. He had heard that this had happened to his brother Jesse. Frank is buried in Hill Park Cemetery, Independence, Missouri.

Nancy Gardner James, the sister to the James brother's father and the wife of George Burns Hite was his and Frank's aunt. The Hite Home, near Adairville, Logan Co., KY, was a favorite refuge for the James Gang. Jesse continued to suffer from the lung wound he received while attempting to surrender as the Civil War came to an end. He learned of a Doctor Eve in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN who specialized in treating such wounds. Jesse had joined the Anderson Gang at the age of 17. After the gang's bold robbery of Clay County Savings Bank in Liberty, Clay Co., MO on 13 Feb 1866, Jesse along with his brother Frank and the Younger Brothers Associated, took refuge at the home of George and Nancy. From there, Jesse sought treatment from Doctor Eve and recuperated for several months. As he regained strength, and by now needing money, Jesse along with Frank James, Cole Younger, Jim White, John Jarret and George Shepard, who had all served together with Quantrill during the Civil War, chose to rob the Southern Deposit Bank of Russellville, Logan Co., KY on 20 Mar 1868. Somewhat more confident from their success they had in their first bank robbery in Liberty, Clay Co., MO, the gang took between 9 and 14 thousand dollars and once more took refuse at the Hite home. The James' always considered them-selves Missouri-Indian Territory folks, though they had major ties to Fort Scott.

"Of all the world's legendary charters, few have attracted world-wide fascination like the outlaw, Jesse James. Some call him America's Robin Hood, while others see him as a cold-blooded killer. Perhaps he was all of these things. Some people say it was the cruel treatment from Union soldiers that turned Frank and Jesse to a life of crime during the Civil War. Certainly during the war years they learned to kill while riding with William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson.
After the war, Jesse was wounded while surrendering. Within a year, Frank and Jesse are believed to have pulled off the first daylight bank robbery in peace time. They made off with $60,000 from the Liberty, MO bank not far from their home, and one man was killed. For the next 15 years, the James boys roamed throughout the U.S. robbing trains and banks of their gold, building a legend that was to live more than a century after Jesse's death.
Jesse married his own first cousin after a nine-year courtship. She was named for her own mother, Zerelda, and he called her Zee for short.
The Pinkerton Detective Agency was called in to help catch the famous desperadoes. Jesse reach his Waterloo in September, 1876, when his gang, including the Younger brothers, took on the bank at Northfield, Minn. Within minutes the town people returned fire. All except Frank and Jesse were either killed or were wounded and captured. After the incident, Zerelda and Frank's wife Anna Ralston tried to get them to take on a more normal life.
With a $10,000 reward on his head, Jesse moved to St. Joseph, MO with his family in the fall of 1881 to hide out. On Christmas Eve, Jesse and Zee moved their family into a small house atop a high hill overlooking St. Joseph. Living under the assumed name of Tom Howard, Jesse rented the house from a city councilman for $14 a month. He attended church, but did not work for a living.
During the winter of 1882, Jesse tried to buy a small farm in Nebraska. But in April, he was short of cash. All of his earlier gang members were either dead or in prison, but Jesse recruited Bob and Charlie Ford to help him rob the Platte City bank. The Ford brothers posed as cousins of Jesse James, but actually were not related to Jesse at all. The $10,000 reward on Jesse proved too appealing. While Jesse stood on a chair in the family home at 1318 Lafayette Street in St. Joseph to dust and straighten a picture, Bob and Charlie drew their guns. Bob Ford put an end to the James Legend with a single bullet to the back of the head on April 3, 1882. The Ford brothers attempted to collect the reward. Instead, they were charged with murder. They were sentenced to hang, but were pardoned by Governor Tom Crittenden.
Two years later Charlie Ford committed suicide and Bob Ford, the "dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard, and laid poor Jesse in his grave," was himself killed in a bar room brawl in Creede, Colorado, in 1892.
Jesse James was a moral paradox. He was a good father and family man, and was religious in his way. Whether he stole from the rich and gave to the poor, or just kept it all, has never been decided. Jesse James died in 1882, but the legend of Jesse James continues more than a century beyond his death. Today Jesse and Frank James are among the best-known Americans in the world.
