Cindy Blankenship’s Tombstone Project

For the past several years my goal has been to locate and photograph the headstones of my ancestor’s graves.  It is obviously a very lengthy and time-consuming project.  This quest has sent me to many cemeteries in several states.  It has found me climbing fences, braving bulls in fields and attending a rededication of a Confederate soldier’s grave.  My family and friends think I’m either obsessed with death or just plain strange, but I find cemeteries the most peaceful place to contemplate what these ancestors were like; who they were and how they lived and, yes, how they died.  I’ve found that the unmarked graves draw the most reaction from me.  Perhaps the next project should be a tombstone or memorial placement project.  To view photos of headstones click on the cemetery picture above or click here
