John Cook was born January 31, 1838 in Ireland, the son of Charles and Mary (King) Cook . According to family
tradition, John Cook was in the honor guard for Edward, Prince of Wales. In the fall of 1860, Prince Edward,
at the age of 19, became the first member of the British royal family to visit North America. His tour included
Canada and the United States. During one of the tours through the city, a young Susannah Bish reached out to
the young Prince; however, the ever-ready John Cook stopped her. Apparently, the couple became enamored
with each other. John Cook finished his tour with the Prince and returned to England. However, he soon
retired his position and returned to Canada to marry Susannah.
John and Susannah were married 13 July 1863 in Canada. Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their way to
the United States. John made his living as a boilermaker throughout most of his life. Their eldest daughter,
Jane Agnes, was born May 21, 1864 in Pennsylvania . Sometime before 1866, the family returned to Canada
where Charles and John (about 1866 & 1868 respectively) were born.
In 1880, the family is living in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. According to family tradition, John worked as a boilermaker
on the Peace Bridge during this time. (The Peace Bridge connected Buffalo, NY to Fort Erie, Canada. Although
given the dates of construction for the Peace Bridge, I am not sure this story is accurate.) Eventually, the family
made their way to Springfield, Illinois where John and Susannah lived out the rest of their days. John Cook died
October 22, 1930 at the age of 92 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois . He is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery,
Springfield, Illinois, next to his wife and daughters, Jane Cook and Mary Margaret (Cook) Eddington .
