George Martin Hansen was born May 29, 1877 in Oevenum, Isle of Fhr, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of
Martin and Brodine Margaretha (Peterson) Hansen. According to Marret Kauffner who provided most of the
genealogical lookups for the Hansen line, Georges birth name was Martin Conrad Hansen.
The Isles of Fhr, Amrum and Sylt are in the North Frisian Islands in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark and
Germany. The Frisians are a race of hardy seafarers and farmers according to Marret Kauffner.
At the age of 16, George left Germany via Hamburg aboard the Rhaetia arriving at Ellis Island in New York on
May 22, 1893. (I have concerns on whether Rhaetia is the true ship he arrived based on the ships
description as built in 1904. It is unclear at this point whether the description is incorrect or whether the ship
name is incorrect.)
George made his way to Livingston County, IL where he had pictures taken in the late 1890s in both Dwight and Pontiac.
George Hansen married Anna Magsin on March 4, 1907 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. George and Anna had three
children: Herman, Minnie and Louise. Herman passed away sometime before 1920 . According to George
and Annas grandson, Samuel Eddington, Sr., Herman was visiting the Magsin family in Kankakee when an
epidemic broke out. He was buried before the family was notified in Springfield due to fears of spreading
the disease. Thus far, death or burial records have not been found.
George began working for Alton Railroad in August 1912 in Dwight, Livingston, IL. He worked as a car repairman in
Dwight until March of 1916. George re-located his family to Springfield working for Ridgely Yards from
September 1916 until his retirement, probably at the end of the year in 1938. On October 16, 1924, George
had a picture taken by Art & Emma of Washington, D.C. at Chicago & Alton RR. The picture is labeled
Rip Track Gang.
George Hansen applied for and became a naturalized United States citizen on January 2, 1923 in Springfield,
Sangamon County, Illinois, Certificate number 1570799.
George Martin Hansen died in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois on May 16, 1955. He was laid to rest at Oak
Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois on May 18, 1955.

Carl and his family came to America around 1902/1903 depending on the source , most likely on the Main on September 5,

Magsin on his social security application stated he was born in Maunsfeldt, Germany . In Augusts 1920 Federal

According to a family picture, Carl Magsin was not a very tall man. The picture of Carl and Louise was probably taken at
a wedding anniversary celebration for the couple. Its interesting to note that Carl was shorter than Louise.

Simon Jrgens
Simon Jrgens was born April 9, 1757, the son of Jrgen Thomsen and Maren. Marret Kauffner and Jens Uwe

Nissen states her last name was Jepsen.)
According to Marret Kauffner, There is a note that says that Simon was a Heurop Amt Rippne (err.), which I
cant translate. An Amt is an official and I think Ripen is a place in Denmark. The note also says that
Simon was listed in the 1835 census as age 67 and in the St.Rg. (church?) records as 75.
Two children were born of this marriage:

Jrgen Simon Jrgensen, b. September 17, 1804 in Bjerum
Simon died April 17, 1835 in Midlum.
