In the name of God Amen. the ninth day of August in the Year of our Lord, 1776. I Samuel Gilbert, Senr. of Bedford County Virginia being very Sick and weak in Body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be given to God for the Same and calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my Body I recomment it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing Doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give Devise and dispose of the same in manner and form following that is to say, in the first place I give and Bequeath to Martha Gilbert my Dearly beloved wife all the Survey of Land whereon I now live and on both sides of the Creek and a Small entry that lies between this Survey and Ruffins Road and at her death then all the lands to fall to my Son Benjamin Gilbert and his heirs or assigns and my said Wife Martha Gilbert to have all the negroes Household furniture and all my moveable Estate and at her Death my Moveable Estate to be Equally Divided amongst all my Children. I give and Bequeath Wm. Clements 250 Acres of Land lying on the west side of Seneca Creek Joining [??] Webster Gilbert and to Molly Welch whereon he now lives after he has paid the remainder of the money which is Seventeen pounds Seven Shillings and Six pence. I give or leave 200 acres of land to Webster Gilbert lying on Jonas's Branch the Land which he bought of James Clements. And I do Constitute make and ordain Saml. Gilbert Junr. and John Webster Gilbert, Excrs. of this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments Wills and Legacies bequests and Executrs. by me in any ways before this time Named Willed and Bequeathed Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament and likewise I give and bequeath to Martha Gilbert my beloved wife a Survey of Land Joining the Land whereon I now live and at her Death to fall to my son Benjn. Gilbert. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the Day and Year above Written

Isaac Reynolds, John Templeton, John Welch

At a Court held for Bedford County October 28th 1776.
The within last Will and Testament of Samuel Gilbert Deceased was proved by the Oaths of Isaac Reynolds and John Templeton two of the Witnesses thereto Subscribed and Ordered to be Recorded And on the motion of John Webster Gilbert one of the Executors therein Named who made Oath thereto Certificate is Granted him for obtaining Probate thereof in due form giving Security whereupon he together with Moses Fuqua and Richart Stith his Securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the Penalty of one Thousand Pounds for the Said Executors due and faithfull administration of the Said Decedents Estate and Performance of his Will. Samuel Gilbert Jun. the other Executor in the Said Will named having refused Joining in the Probate thereof.
