Project Results
The largest group of matching test results (#37-50) is the family of John Clements of King William Co Va and Hanover Co VA, b.c.1660-1749, through either his brothers or his sons William, Stephen, and Simon. Son John seems to be the progenitor of many Clements in Petersburg VA in the 1700s, and is now represented by matching DNA results. # 37 has a mutation on the 3rd marker. He also has a 12/12 match with another descendant of his proven ancestor. #39 has two mutations on the 10th and 11th markers. They are a paper trail match for the rest of the group. All other early lines are represented by 2 or 3 matching sets of results.
The surprising results so far show that most of the early VA and MD Clements immigrants were not related to one another. In early VA, Cpt. Francis of Isle of Wight Co VA 1660-1717 was a probable brother or cousin of Benjamin of Gloucester Co VA b.c. 1655, d.after 1714, as their descendants are a perfect DNA match.
Results Chart by FTDNA computer at bottom of this page.
Additional comments on matching groups;
Group 1. Tests 2 and 3 Descendants of William Clements of Kershaw Dist SC mid 1700s, a possible immigrant landed directly in SC.
Group 2. Tests 6 and 7 Samuel Thompson Clemmons of VA and Montgomery Co., NC, b. 1751, was a probable grgrandson of John Clements, 1631-1710 of Surry Co VA.
Group 3. Tests 8 and 9 Documentation has not been found, but both participants have independently determined that they probably descend from John Clements of Charles Co MD, the place of their proven origins. These two participants did not know each other prior to DNA testing.
Group 4. Tests 11-14 #12452 possibly descends from Jacob Clements of SC but none of the group has been able to track their ancestors earlier than 1813 in GA.
Group 5. Tests 18-23 Peyton Clements was a probable grandson of Benjamin Clements of Gloucester Co VA through his youngest son Thomas. The first three participants in this group descend from sons of Peyton Clements, c. 1725-1775.
George, a proven son of Benjamin of Gloucester Co VA is a perfect match for Peyton Clements and the Isle of Wight Co Clements. George, b. c.1695 d. 1729 in Bertie Co NC naming sons Benjamin and George Jr.
Also in group 5 is the proven descendant of Cpt Francis Clements of Surry/Isle of Wight Co VA, which indicates that Francis and Benjamin were probably either brothers or cousins, Benjamin b. c.1655 and Francis b.1660.
Group 6. Tests 25, 26, and 4 These do not know how they connect. #4 descends from Dr John and Mace Clements of Tappahannock, Essex Co Va c. 1700, and is an 11/12 match to 24 and 25, who was is in Gloucester Co VA in 1798. Test # 43213 is an 11/12 match and could be their earlier ancestor, having been in Essex Co Va in 1707, and having descendants in GA in late 1700s.
Group 7. Tests 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 Two of these matching participants have traced their ancestry back to Andrew Clementson of Sweden and Cecil Co MD. 27 and 30 both descend from a common ancestor born 1769 in VA yet they have a 6 marker difference in 25.
Group 8. Tests 37-50 Participants all match proven descendants of the family of John Clements of King William / Hanover Co. VA 1660-1749, either through his brothers, or his sons William, Stephen, and Simon. His son John, who seemingly settled in Petersburg VA, now has a matching representation in the DNA project results. The documented sons were John, NR, William of Amelia Co VA, Stephen of Goochland Co VA, and Simon of Granville Co NC.
William Francis Clemmons may be the son of Francis Clements who d. Amelia Co. VA 1764, son of William of Amelia d. 1760. Test #27745, he has one mutation on the 3rd marker, and is an 11/12 match to the rest of the group. Another descendant of William Francis Clemmons is a 12/12 match for 27745, and an 11/12 match for the main group.
Participant 19607 has two mutations on the 10th and 11th markers but he is a proven member of this group.
Test # 38975. David Clements b. c.1745 VA, migrated from Petersburg VA to GA c.1792. He was probably the grandson of John, the missing son of John of Hanover Co VA c. 1660-1749, who seemed to have settled in Petersburg VA leaving a large family of related Clements in the area.
Test # 10868 This participant's connection to John of Hanover has not been determined. He was in Bedford Co. VA in 1776 with his wife's family and the family of Cpt. Benjamin Clement of Pittsylvania Co. His son Benjamin and grandson Samuel Gilbert Clements were, and descendants are in Greensville Co. VA.
William of Amelia Co who died 1760 was probably born c. 1680, the first son of John of King Wm and Hanover Co VA.
John b. 1687 (Abingdon Parish records) who was deceased before 1748, was a son of John of Hanover; widow Mary.
Stephen of Goochland, 1692-1746 was a son of John of Hanover
Simon Clement was the youngest son of John of Hanover
Cpt. Benjamin Clement was the son of Wm. of Amelia Co VA, d. 1760, son of John of Hanover
Wm. Clement d. 1764 Amelia Co VA was the son of Wm. Sr. who died 1760 Amelia Co VA, son of John of Hanover
Group 9. Tests 51 and 52 One of these proven 3rd cousins has a mutation on the 4th marker. Their common ancestor was a 19th Century immigrant from Ireland and some participants in Ireland are the goal to determine their earlier connections.
Test #43213 Participant descends from Dr John Clements b.c. 1685 and son Dr Mace Clements of Tappahannock, Essex Co VA. Results just in show that he is an 11/12 match for a line emigrating from Liverpool England to Canada c. 1896.
