McAdoo February 18, 1834 in Parke Co., Indiana, daughter of Finley McAdoo and Harriet(McAdoo/ Mater)Mater.

Notes for John Lincoln Mahaffey:

1. John Lincoln MAHAFFEY-76

He might have immigrated from Ireland with two brothers, and settled in Ohio, and later moved to Iowa. Although James Herrick does not think so. I originally had Cork Co., Ireland, but have since changed it so I can work on the Westmoreland, Pennnsylvania connection.

I also have a record of three other children born to John L. Mahaffey and Margaret McAdoo. They are: Patrick, W.H., and Joseph Mahaffey ( I don't know).

the 1830 Ohio census lists a John Mahaffey in Adams County, and Liberty Township. Don't know if ssame person at all. John L. Mahaffey is buried at the Bellfountaine Cemetary, Scott township, Mahaska Co., Iowa.

I am getting different years for his death. One is 17 Nov. 1856 and 1857. A James Mahaffey and family came from Ireland in 1811, according to a passenger list. Don't know if it is the same family.

The WPA cemetery records for Mahaska Co., Iowa, have the date of 7 December 1801 and a death date of 17 Nov. 1857. Is this the correct John Mahaffey. The 1850 Iowa census says he is 47 years old and and born in Pennsylvania. (Census is hard to read). This would make him born in either 1802 or 1803. This census does say he was a farmer.

Have note that he was born in Penn., according to the 1880 Census/ and Ireland according to Delora Nissen Kohl.

According to Hermon Fagley there is a book about the Mahaffey's. Ellison/Mahaffey Book or Mahaffey/Ellison book written by a man who lived in Hamilton, Ohio. There were three Mahaffey brothers' who came (perhaps from Northern Ireland and the Scotch Irish line) that came over. John, was born about 1750. He was in the Revolutionary War, was from Sussex Co., New Jersey..They then moved to Pennsylvania around Collensville in Fayatee or Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

Some of them then settledon the present Adams/Brown Co., Ohio line about 1800 at Decatur, Ohio and just East.

In the 1840 Indiana census in Parke & Vermillion there is a John and a Thomas Mahaffey, and in Vermillion Co., there is a William McAdoo. Any connection???The John in Parke Co., Indiana has dates that match the children of my John Lincoln Mahaffey. Perhaps they lived there in 1840. Mrs. Joan Porter who lives in Florida has information on a James Mahaffey, born 9 July 1795 in Lycoming Co., Pa., who married Jane Caldwell and they had children in Butler Co., Ohio. Their son, Thomas M. Mahaffey married Hannah Griffin (From Wales) and later moved to Batholomew Co., Indiana. In Butler Co., Ohio, there is a Jane Mahaffey who was born 1 January 1800, and died 1 Sept 1856, who is the wife of James. Could this be a relation?

Mr. Hermon Fagley writes "I 'think' there were three brothers who settled on the Present Adams/Brown County, Ohio line around 1800 at Decator, Ohio and just East. Til 1818 the neighborhood was all in Adams Co., Ohio. Think these Mahaffey brothers came there from near Connelsville, now Fayette Co., Pa.

(so 1790 PA census, you might find Mahaffeys in S. Westmoreland Co., Pa., who were neighbors of Connellsville, Fayette Co., Pa. Lincoln was not a famous name til 1860, but there were Lincoln's in the Connelsville, Pa., read.

There was a colony from Connelsville, Pa., to Adams Co., Ohio, who named daughters "Angeline". Rev. Robert Finley was a noted Presbyterian to later Methodist Minister of Southwest, Ohio. He preaches 1790 in SW most Fayette Co., Pa. A John Mahaffey married Ruth Gordan and served 1776 from Sussex Co., N.J. I think his brother, who died about 1801 young, is my wife's ancestor. Lincoln had an iron furnaces near or in Mommouth Co., N.J. where Angeline name was used. Iron region in SE Berks, northwest Chester Co., Pa., adjoining "The Boones...In 1811 many families on the Adams/Brown Co., Ohio line moved toBuseron Shaker village south of Parke Co.,Indiana. Real quess would have them first on W Mommouth, N.J. line@1700 going to tennant's church."

In Mahaska Co., Iowa there is also a Daisy Mahaffey buried in the Old White Cemetery in Scott Township. Is this a relative? The dates are unreadable.

Leila Beall says that about 1850 they moved about 15 miles northwest of Eddyville,Iowa.

Notes for Margaret E. McAdoo:

Have one source that says she is buried in the Hoover Cemetary.

She died at her son's R. L. Mahaffey's home.

According to her obituary:

She was born in North Carolina, and when a child she moved with her parents to Tennessee and then to Indiana. She was united in marriage in Park County, Indiana, to John L. Mahaffey. She has a brother who lived in Iowa, and survives her.

The day after her marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Mahaffey left on horseback for Butler County, Ohio, a distance of 500 miles. Several years later they returned to their former home in Indiana, and in 1849 emigrated to Iowa. In the early spring of 1850 they moved 15 northwest of Eddyville, Iowa.

John Lincoln Mahaffey died August 23, 1857 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa.

In 1862, in the company of two sons and one daughter, they left overland with an ox team for Oregon, it requiring the entire season to make the trip. Hereone son and her daughter died and in 1888 she came to this place (Hartford, Ks.) where she made her home with her son R.L. Mahaffey. She has crossed the plains four times, and could tell many interesting episodes of her frontier life. She was united with the Presbyterian church in her girlhood.

Originally had that she was born in North Carolina. A note from John Bruce Kelley says she was born in South Carolina. It says this is from the 1880 Census. But in 1850 Iowas Census it says she was born in Tennessee. Have note that she was distantly related to William A. McAdoo (in politics WW1, later in California politics).

In the 1850 Parke Co., Indiana Census, there is a Finley McAdoo listed. He was born about 1827 in Md (Maryland?) Any relation?

Samuel Mahaffey served three months in the Union Army during the Civil War in 1862. His mother, who was a widow, needed Sam home as his older brothers were serving in the Union Army. She rented out the family farm in Iowa, bought a covered wagon and supplies, took her young daughter, a younger son and Sam, and headed West for Oregon. She was 49 at the time. She made two to three more trips back and forth. Fineally she settled in Kansas, living with one of her older sons and his family until her death in 1902. Eventually Sam wrote his memoirs detailing his adventures moving from Iowa to Oregon in 1862 and his adventures during the Bannock Indian uprising of 1878 and his brief move to Colorado in 1872.

She married William Henry Fleming April 13, 1873 in Hartford, Lyon Co., Kansas, son of Robert Fleming and Lucinda Morris.

Notes for Alice H. Mahaffey:

Hartford Times, March 18, 1927

Again has death invaded our midst and taken one of our pioneers. Mrs. W.H. Fleming, after a lingering illness of many months duration, passed to her eternal rest soon after noon Monday, March 14, 1927. Not possessed with a strong constitution, a severe attack of influenza left it's imprint and she failed to recover from its ravages. She was taken to the Newman hospital in Emporia where she was under skilled nursing. The treatments did not seem to give her the relief that was expected, even though everything that medical skill could suggest was resorted to. She was brought home Tuesday of last week and became much worse Wednesday. There was no perceptible change and she quietly, peaceably slipped away into death's portals at the time above stated.

Alice Mahaffey, the oldest child of Robert and Sarah, deceased, was born October 30, 1855, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She came with her parents to Kansas in 1857, where they homesteaded a claim southwest of Hartford. They returned to Iowa, but in 1859 came again to Hartford, where they took up a permanent residence on their claim. She grew to womanhood here and went as a bride from this farm. She was married to William H. Fleming, April 13, 1873, and to this union seven children were born, five of whom have preceded the mother in death. The first child died at birth; the second child, William Francis, Died February 7, 1876, aged 1 year; Sarah Alice, Mrs. Orla Hamman, died March 1, 1904, aged 23 years; Robert Ernest died March 2, 1906, aged 19 years, and Estella Grace ( Mrs. Ellis Beckham) died March 1, 1925, aged 42 years.

She is survived by her husband, two sons,Charles A. Fleming, of Los Angeles, CA., and Harry M. Fleming, of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Weaver, of San Jose, CA.; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The deceased joined the Christian church in early girlhood and has always adhered strictly to the tenets of this faith. She was a consistent christian and lived to the full measure of her belief. Her life was pure and good here and surely fit for dwelling the Palace to the King.

Children of Alice Mahaffey and William Fleming are:

91. Sarah (Sadie)6 Mahaffey (Robert Finley5, John Lincoln4, Robert3, Thomas2, John1) was born March 23, 1857 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa, and died October 06, 1944 in San Jose, California, Buried Oct.9 Santa Clara, California. She married (1) Alpheus Guy Kelley May 04, 1875 in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas, son of Martin Kelley and Betsy Dow. She married (2) Russell Arthur Frisby March 25, 1883 in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas, son of Jonathan Frisby and Kate Darrow. She married (3) Thomas J. (John/Jack) Weaver August 07, 1890 in San Jose, California.

Notes for Sarah (Sadie) Mahaffey:

Sarah left her son, Joseph Martin Kelley, with grandpa Fleming, when she went with Mr. Frisby to California. Joseph was only four years old then.

According to May kelley Gaugh, "Sarah Mahaffey Kelley Frisby Weaver came back to Hartford and brought Arthur's girl, Gladys (who was then about 10 years old) with her where she went to school. Sarah stayed in Hartford and took care of her father until he died. After Grandad Mahaffey died, May Kelley took Sarah some butter, and confronted her because she had given her granddaughter Gladys to Mrs. Earnest to keep where she worked in his restaurant. May Kelley Gaugh said that Sarah said, "Don't grieve the spirit, don't grieve the spirit." May then went to Earnest Restaurant and got Gladys and took her to Joseph Martin and Amy's house. Gladys also lived with May Kelley Gaugh, Sadie was a society gal and loved silk and satins. Her third Husband, Mr. Weaver, was a wealthly man and they lived in San Jose, CA. The would write about once a year to Joseph Martin Kelley and his family and Joseph would cry and get upset and wonder why Sadie and Jack couldn't write more often and longer letters. May said the letters were only about one page long.

Joseph and Myra went to California when she died. He went to get his share of the estate but his half-sister Myrtle said the law stated that no money was allowed to go out of the state and he could not have any. He got so mad that he fineally got $1,000. He was happy about this. (This is according to May Kelley Gaugh)"

Notes for Alpheus Guy Kelley:

RANDOM NOTES:

Alpheus and Sara (Sadie) Mahaffey Kelley were divorced on March 28, 1882. Guy Kelley is not the son of Alpheus Guy Kelley. Alpheus was in the Civil War: Pvt. 60 F2 Regiment, Maine Cavalry Volunteers. When he was eighteen he moved tio Chicago, Illinois with his parents. He probably moved to Kansas about 1871-1873, after his mother died. Alpheus Kelley must have left his son, Joseph Martin Kelley to be raised by Bill and Alice Fleming when he married Ida Pittman in 1882, and Joseph must have been about 6 years old at the time. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetary in Emporia, Kansas. Rita Louk has a copy of his obituary. She has a note from John Bruce Kelley that Alpheus Guy and Sadie lived in Hartford on the east side of street, in the middle of town, where doctor's office was. Mary Kelley Gaugh writes that they were married in Hartford and they lived above the Wagner store in one of the apartments. There was also a shoe store and Dr. Neisted's office up there too. They later lived morthwest of Hartford, Ks., about 1899.

According the May Kelley Gaugh, after Alpheus and Saide were divorced he went to Emporia and started working for the Santa Fe railroad. He worked in the round house on the train motors. The round house was heated by burning coke in open 55 gallon drums. It was very hard to breath as it hurt the lungs when one took a breathe. Alpheus worked in the round house for 20 years. It was during this time that he met Mrs. Calihan and they were married. Mrs. Calihan was preganant with Guy at the time. (But Guy is not Alpheus's real son, see Mrs. Calihan) After Guy came Gussie, Bert and Earl. After Alpheus Kelley died, Mrs. Calihan moved to Indiana and married Mr. Calihan and had five more children.

According to May Kelley Gaugh, Alpheus was TB (tuberculosis) from the smoke in the roundhouse. He developed black lung disease because the roundhouse was heated by burning coke in tin barrels and it was open and hard to breathe in.

Alpheus Kelley is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia, KS., in the northeast corner with the Civil War Veterans. He served in the Civil War. His daughter Gussie said he was a very lovinig and had a good disposition. He was tall.

Note that he lived on the west side of Union street and he is listed in the city directory in 1877 as a laborer. In the 1883 directory he is listed as living at the North side of South Ave. (Three doors west of West Street) with his wife Ida.

May Kelley Gaugh said that after the Civil War that Alpheus went to Emporia to see a friend (an attorney) who lived here and stayed.

Child of Sarah Mahaffey and Alpheus Kelley is:

Name could be Russell Arthur Frisby. Died at his mother's home. May Kelley Gaugh writes, "that he had tuberculosis, and that he married a Zimmerman girl who worked for the Evens' in Hartford. Arthur and his wife then returned to California where she died and then he died. Arthur did come back to Hartford."

"John Mahaffey was murdered in a saloon in LaGrande, June 10. He was night bartender in the Fisher Saloon. An assasin, presumably seeking plunder, shot Mr. Mahaffey, who was alone in the saloon, throught the heart at close range. Previous to being shot, someone had hammered him over the head with a blunt instrument, probably with the butt of a revolver. Six men were arrested, but three them were released.

Mr. Mahaffey leaves a wife and one daughter to morn his death. He was killed in the Fisher Saloon in Oregon."

Notes for Robert Lincoln (Pete) Mahaffey:

From newspaper clipping of October 15, 1926:

R. L. Mahaffey Dies Suddenly

"The news of the death of R.L. Mahaffey, a life-time resident of this community, went out over the wire Saturday morning as a shock barbed with pain and sorrow. When this paper last came to you the deceased was upon our streets greeting our people with a happy 'Good morning'. Today all that is mortal of our friend and townsman is at peaceful rest in our silent city.

Mr. Mahaffey had been in the best of health until two years ago last March, when his aged father passed away. The shock seemed to break him down physically and he was never well afterwards. Last Thursday and Friday he felt worse than usual and Friday afternoon the pains in his neck and right shoulder became so severe that he went home from up town and went to bed. In the evening, Dr. Niensted, was called who found his heart in a very bad condition. About 8:15 o'clock he took much worse and Dr. Brickell was called in consultation, but the skill of physicians was not sufficient to restore the dying man, and he passed to the Great Beyond at about 2 o'clock Saturday morning, October 9, 1926.

"Robert Lincoln Mahaffey was born on the old Mahaffey homestead southwest of Hartford May 9, 1866, and had lived all his life in Lyon county. He was one of a family of ten children, four boys and six girls, all of whom with the exception of two sisters preceded him to the other world. He followed farming as a vocation until 1909, when his health broke and in 1913 he engaged in the hardware business in this place with Frank O. Smith, Daniel Rowlands and his father, Robert F. Mahaffey, as partners. He later was intered in a garage with W.R. Gilkey. Several years before his death he retired from business."

"He was married to Miss Eva Catherine Lawrence July 3, 1888, and to this union four children were born, Mrs. Lena McIlvain, living southwest of Hartford; Mrs. Pearl Steenis, living north of Hartford; a son who died in infancy, and Miss Ethel Mahaffey, at home. Besides his devoted wife and three daughters he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Weaver, of San Jose, California, and Mrs. Alice Fleming of this place. Six grandchildren also survive."

"Mr. Mahaffey was converted when about 28 years of age and united with the Eagle Creek Methodist Episcopal church in 1894 under the pastorate of Rev. P. H. Monroe. He taught a Sunday school class in that church for sometime, thus helping to promote the Kingdom there. he united with the Hartford M.E. church in 1923 and was faithful in his devotion to the church of his choice, always to be found in his place at the various services. He was assistant teacher of the Men's Sunday school class taught by J. W. Thomas and on the Wednesday evening previous to his death had prepared his lesson for Sunday."

"The deceased became a member of Hartford Masonic Lodge No. 193 August 22, 1913, and served in every place that the lodge called upon him to fill with marked ability as a Mason and with the kindest regards for his brothers. He was also a member of the Hartford Eastern Star Chapter and the Royal Arch Masons in Emporia. he was also a member of Hartford Lodge No. 8 A O U W.

"Mr. Mahaffey was a member of the board of directors of the Hartford National Bank and that institution was closed all day Monday out of respect for its highly honored member. he was deeply interested in everything that tended to benefit the town and community and will be greatly missed by one and all."

"He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father; to his sisters a tender brother; to his friends the soul of fellowship. But greatest of all was he as a man. And as a man it is that those who knew him best most love to contemplate him. He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellow men, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness is following in the footsteps of his Master."

"Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. H. Beadle. He preached an eloquent sermon and dwelt lovingly on the close tie of friendship that had existed between himself and the deceased. A double quartette composed of Mesdames Britton, Thomas, Wagoner and Bernheisel and Messrs. Poyzer, H. Fullen, S.C. Jones and Frank Hovious,. accompanied by Mrs. J. W. Kerby, sang his favorite songs, and Mrs. Thomas sang sweetly 'The City Four Square.' At the close of the services friends were permitted to see for the last time the face and form of the deceased. The remains were then taken to the Hartford cemetery for interment. Members of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, which has attended in a body, accompanied the funeral cortege to the cemetery and at the grave, after a prayer by Rev. Beadle, the impressive Masonic funeral rites were read."

The funeral was quite large only three other funerals ever being as large, the high esteem of Mr. Mahaffey and his untimely demise prompting many to pay this last tribute of respect. Beautiful floral design covered the casket, alter and chancel rail. The business houses were all closed during the funeral and classes of the High school attended in body. The pallbearers, all close friends in business, were Messrs, C.T. West, M. J. Lalouette, G. E. Wilson, Frank West, W.J. Musch and Dr. Wm. Nienstedt. So closes the life of the deceased, but the influence he has shed will live on into the future."

"The out town relatives in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Mahaffey, of Nardin, Oklahoma, J.L. Mahaffey, of Ottawa, Kansas, and John L. Wilson of Deerfield, Kansas."

He married Emma Lena Snider June 14, 1913 in Prineville, Oregon, By Baptist Minister, C.P. Bailey, daughter of Samuel Snider and Margaret Stewart.

Notes for Robert Sampson Mahaffey:

Robert Solomon lived in Redmond, Oregon in the early 1900's when the community was organized. He was one of Redmond's first lawmen, serving as the city marshal in 1913. He also built some of the sidewalks there. In March, 1917 his residence was listed as Hermiston, Oregon. His occupation was listed as a blacksmith. In 1922 he was living in Roseburg, Oregon. Where he lived after 1922 and until his divorce somewhere around the 1940's is unknown. He later moved to San Leandro, California where he worked as a blacksmith until 1966 when he moved to Bend, Oregon.

I (Leila) remember a 8x10 black and white photograph of him. In the photo he was on a bucking bronc. I also remember in a little house where he lived when I was real little he had a saddle sitting a wooden saw-horse in the livingroom. When we would go visit grandpa I would climb up on the saddle and spend most of the visit there. Grandpa never seem to mind that I played on the saddle. I would pretend I was riding with Annie Oakley or Hopalong Cassidy. We would chase and capture all the bad guys. I still remember the smell of the leather. Whe he lived in San Leandro that he had built, he didn't have the saddle.

When I (Leila) was little, grandpa would take me horse-back riding. I would always nag him to let me ride the big horse. I guess one day he got tired of my nagging and decided to put the "fear of God" in me. He placed me upon what seem to be a very big horse. But what happened next he wasn't expecting. I kick my feet into the horse and said "giddy'up". Fortunately grandpa was holding the reins close to the bit. The next thing I knew I had been pulled off the horse and we were on our way home. I remember having a real clear idea he was not happy with me. While driving home, grandpa repeatedly made me promise not to tell my mother what had happened. He said she wouldn't let him take me riding any more. And he was right. I enjoyed the times he took me riding too much to hamper any chance to go riding with him. I promised over and over I wouldn't. My mother never did find out. I also never nagged grandpa about letting me ride the big horse again.

He married (2) Myra (Nye) (Kelley) Epperson October 16, 1937 in Emporia, Lyon, Kansas.

Notes for Joseph Martin Kelley:

Joseph's two marriages both ended in divorce.

Johnny remembers that Joseph Kelley lived with Leo and Lelia after Jerry graduated from high school (summer and fall of 1951). He loved to play pinochle and he thought he was good, but Johnny, Everett and Kenny would play him and win and he would get so mad that he would throw the cards at the wall and say "you darn kids" and go to bed. He liked to kik and tease, but had a hard time taking it. Johnny says he had no memory of grandpa Kelley when he was youg, supposedly because of some fight with Grandpa Kelley and Leo had.

They ignored each other and would even cross the street in Hartford so they would not have to talk to each other. This happened when Jerry Kelley was in high school and according to Colleen, whe went and picked up Grandpa Kelley one day and took him to Leo's for dinner to settle the dispute. Jerry remembers that he was playing foofball and he told his dad that he was going to get a car which was in western Kansas. Dad (Leo) got mad and kicked him out of the house and so he went to live with Grandpa Kelley in Hartford for 3 to 4 months, until dad needed him back on the farm and this was the time when Leo and his father were not speaking to each other.

Joseph Martin Kelley could play the fiddle and harmonica, but Mon (Lelia) did not think he had any lessons.

May Kelley Gaugh remembers that Sarah Mahaffey left Joseph M. Kelley at an early age (probably when she married Mr. Frisby and went to live in California and Joseph was four years old) and he lived with his grandfather Fleming (and I think his Uncle Fleming).

According to a note from Dora Hull Kelley, Joseph Martin Kelley was fun to be around and loved to play cards.

According to a note from John Bruce Kelley, Joseph Martin worked for Uncle Bill Fleming and at the age of 12 he saved $12.00 for shoes and clothes, etc, but that Sadie came back, talked him out of it and bought a gold watch. His father left him or had no contact with him (Probably when he married Ida Pittman in 1882) when Joseph was about 6.

He was raised by Bill and Alice Fleming. According to May Kelley Gaugh, Bill was a real S.O.B., a mean man. One day Bill Fleming was going to town and told the dids tostay away from the clock on the mantle. Joseph looked into the clock after he had left and found a letter from his father. Joseph didn't even know he had a father in Emporia. May said he received several letters from his family. She also remembers that Joseph loved to be with older people.

Lelia Kelley state that both Joseph Kelley and Amy liked to argue and that Joseph Martin Kelley had a terrible temper (worse than Leo's she said). According to his obituary he was a member of the Eagle Creek Methodist Creek Church and joined in 1897 and was an active member for many years and a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and Rebekah.

According to May Kelley Gaugh, Joseph Kelley had deep blue eyes and attended school at the Fleming School House and then in Hartford, KS., Joseph Martin Kelley and Myra Kelley were married in October, 1937, but divorced on July 12, 1946. She charged him with extreme cruelity and threatened to do her bodily harm.

Joseph Kelley had a house in Hartford, KS., and lived there until he died of a heart attack while sitting on his front porch.

Leo Kelley bought the house after Joseph's death. It had been sold to the Bingham's and dad decided to buy it. I (Rita) don't think mon was happy about it.

Joseph Martin Kelley got $1000.00 from his mother's (Sadie Mahaffey Kelley) estate.
