Notes for MICHEAL SAVAGE:

Michael Savage, is one of the oldest residents of Lake County, He now makes his home on section 21, Antioch Township, near Loon Lake. He was born in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, N.Y, September 26, 1806 and is the son of Thomas Savage, who served in the Revolutionary War. He was a native of France and there bore the name of Gardner, but on coming over to this country with LaFayette to aid the colonies in attaining their freedom, changed his name to Savage that he might return to France under the name of Gardner. After the war was brought to successful termination he settled in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where he worked as a ship carpenter. At the time the British came marching over the hill towards Plattsburgh, he old martial spirit was aroused on seeing the red coats and grabbing up his musket he took part in the battle although he was not an enlisted soldier. He and his wife both died in Plattsburgh, the former when (Michael) was about seven years of age and his wife some five years later. In their family were twelve children, of whom only two are now living - Michael and George, who reside near Antioch.

Michael spent his boyhood days in Plattsburgh and at the early age of thirteen years began life for himself. From that time forward he was dependent upon his own resources and whatever success he has attained is due to his own efforts. He engaged in farming and also in lumbering during his residence in New York. In the town of Beekman, eight miles from Plattsburgh, he was united in marriage with Miss Judie La Plant, a native of Canada; the marriage taking place on the 2nd of March, 1830. After that Mr. Savage worked by the day, month or year until the fall of 1854 when he resolved to seek a home in the West and acting upon this determination settled in Antioch Township, Lake County, where he carried on farming for a number of years. Having now attained an advanced age he is living with his son Lewis, on a farm near Loon Lake.

Mrs. Michael Savage died on the 17th of October 1888. They were parents of the following children: Joseph, who served in the Ninety-sixth Illinois Infantry about three years, spending over 17 months in Andersonville Libby and other prisons; Harriet, wife of Lewis Paddock; Ezekiel; Jeremiah; Jacob, a farmer of Antioch Township, & Lewis.

Mr. Savage was in early life a Whig in political sentiment and on the dissolution of that party became a Republican. He belongs to the Catholic Church, as did also his wife. He has been a hard-working man, has lead a busy and useful life and is now enjoying a well-earned rest. He has attained to his eighty-fifth year but many his juniors do not appear younger then he. As a citizen Mr. Savage has been true to every duty and has won the confidence and high regards of a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Joseph Savage, an honored veteran of the late war, is now engaged in general farming on section 12, West Antioch Township. He also entertains summer boarders, and in the two pursuits has become a well-to-do citizen of the community. The story of his life is as follows: He was born in Clinton County, N.Y., 1836, and is a son of Michael Savage. When about twenty-one years of age, in 1855, he came to Lake County, where he worked as a farm hand for several years. An important event in his life occurred in Wilmot, Wis., his marriage with Miss Alvira Whaples, a native of Ohio, but he left his wife and home, his business and all that bound him to this county and entered the service of his country.

On August 1, 1863, Mr. Savage enlisted in Company C, Ninety-Sixth Illinois Infantry, which was organized in Rockford, and thence was sent to Kentucky. After some skirmishing, the troops proceeded up the Cumberland River, going into Tennessee. The first severe engagement in which he took part with his regiment was at Chickamunga. His brigade was stationed on Mission Ridge, and Company C and one other company were ordered on picket duty for the night, with the command to stay at their post until driven away by the enemy or relieved. During the night our troops retreated and the rebels moved in behind the boys on picket duty. After morning broke Mr. Savage went to the top of Mission Ridge where he could see the rebels in heavy force all around them, and came back and reported. The first thought was to cut through the lines of the enemy, but it was soon seen that would be impossible. Several rebel officers and men came upon the Ridge at different times And were promptly taken prisoners, but the were soon discovered by the main body of the enemy and summoned to surrender but refused. A line of battle eight deep was formed around them and charged their position. The little party repulsed them with loss, but finding it impossible to hold out against a whole rebel army, sent in one of the captive officers with a flag of truce and surrendered. Mr. Savage smashed his gun over a log when his arms were demanded, and threw away the revolver of Lieut. Earl, which that officer had handed to him. He was then ordered by a rebel officer to go and get it, but refused. The prisoners were searched and stripped and were soon on the way to Richmond where they were lodged at the Royster House, which like Libby prison had been a tobacco warehouse. Afterward Mr. Savage was sent to Castle Thunder and drew his rations from Libby prison. The sudden change from full fare to prison fare told heavily on all. From Richmond he was sent to Danville, WA., where he remained until April, 1864, where he was transferred to Andersonville, where he was again stripped. His outfit on entering that prison was a pair of drawers, one shoe, one sock, a part of a blouse and a piece of a shirt for a cap. He also had a knife, one edge of which was a saw, that he carried through all his army and prison experience, and now has it at home in a case with many of the trinkets he made during his captivity. It aided him well in passing away the time, and is highly prized as a relic of those dark days. He was in Andersonville during its crowed period, when thirty thousand men were cooped up. The rations consisted of a little cornmeal and bean soup, and the horrors defy all description. Mr. Savage was next sent to Charleston, where he was guarded on the open ground. The city was bombarded by Federals and shells were continually flying over and around them.

We next find him in a prison pen in Florence, S.C., where he remained during the winter. During that time he worked two weeks on a plan for escape which failed. In addition to the clothing before mentioned he had secured a pair of pants from a dead man and had a shoe upon one foot, and a sock upon the other. He slept out of doors, and in the morning arose to find himself covered with snow. The intense cold caused much suffering among the people. About January, 1865, he was sent to Wilmington, N.C., then to Goldsborough, and then returned to Wilmington, When we again see him in Goldsborough he was a free man, the war having ended. The prisoners were paroled at East River, and had to walk nine miles to meet the Union Army. Mr. Savage started but got lost in the canebrakes and laid out all night in the rain. The next day his comrades, missing him, started back to find him. He heard them call his name but was so weak that he could not answer, and they passed on. A Negro came by and he rattled the canes, which attracted the attention of the fellow who came to him. Mr. Savage whispered to call his comrades, which the Negro did. They came and carried him on a stretcher to the hospital where he raved in delirium for eleven days, tearing off the clothes and not knowing what he did, Here his comrade, William H. Haskin, who had so faithfully stood by him left for the North. Mr. Savage cried and wanted to go too, but the doctor's verdict was "too weak and sick," The vessel was lost that took his comrade North and all perished, so what seemingly was a hardship turned out to the advantage of our subject. When the call was made which took his comrade he also stood up with the others but fell to the floor before he could be counted. Only those well enough to make the trip were to go, and in consequence Mr.. Savage had to remain. He stayed in the hospital until stronger and then went by boat to Annapolis, where he continued in a hospital until March. From that time until April 10 he was in St. Louis, and started to Chicago. On the train he heard of Lee's surrender. His journey had completely sapped his strength, and on reaching his destination he was unable to walk. A wealthy gentleman, performing the act of the good Samaritan, took him in a carriage to a hotel, paid his lodging, etc., had the landlord take him to the train for Waukegan, and did everything possible for his comfort.

In the meantime no news at home had been received from Mr. Savage and his friends and family thought him dead. From Waukegan he went to home in Antioch Township and knocked at the door of the little log cabin. His wife opened the door and fell fainting to the floor. He dropped into a chair unable to put forth another effort. The joy of this meeting can be better imagined than described. For seventeen and a half months Mr. Savage had lain in prison. All summer long he could do nothing but sit at home in a chair, and is yet unable to do a full day's work, his health having been permanently impaired by his prison experiences. Of the twenty-seven of the regiment who were captured with him only seven came out of prison alive, and of these there are but two survivors to-day.

Since returning from the war Mr. Savage has made his home on section 12, Antioch Township, were he owns a good farm of eighty acres. For the past ten years he has kept summer boarders, The children of the family are: Della, now deceased; Ida widow of Edmund Davis; Orilla, wife of Harmon Garwood, Lewis, Clarence, Carrie, Eugene, Laura, Pearl and Joseph. Mr. Savage is a member of the Grand Army Post of Burlington, and since 1860 has been a supporter of the Republican part. He has helped to make the county what it is to-day, having ever taken a commendable interest in its upbuilding, and done all in his power for the promotion of the general welfare. He is as true to every duty and trust as he was to his country in her hours of peril. His army record, for suffering and hardships, can hardly be surpassed, but he does not regret the pain he bore to restore peace to his native land. ****

HYMENEAL.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, 1893, occurred the marriage of Mr. Lewis Savage to Miss Minnie Webb, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Webb, of Hickory, the Rev. Sturges officiating. Two o'clock in the afternoon was the hour appointed for the ceremony, but long before that time the numerous guests from all parts of the township had arrived, bringing with them many beautiful presents as tokens of their esteem for the young couple. Promptly at the appointed hour the members of the bridal party took their places in the east parlor, Mr. Clarence Webb, brother of the bride, acting as groom's man and Miss Crawford as bride's maid. Low and reverently the pastor pronounced the solemn and impressive marriage rites of the Methodist church, and with hands clasped in the presence of God, His humble minister of the gospel and the assembled relatives and friends, the happy couple became man and wife. After hearty congratulations from all present the newly wedded couple led the way to the dining room, where were tables burdened to their utmost with delicious viands. Died, at her home in Grass Lake, Sunday, March 24, 1895, Harriet M., wife of L. A. Paddock, aged 56 years, and 5 months. Harriet M. Savage was born in Clinton County, New York, October 18, 1838, and in company with her parents removed to Antioch, Lake County, Illinois, in 1854. Married Lewis A. Paddock,

May 5, 1861. Five children were born of this union; Eugene, who died March 23, 1863, Ella, wife of H. Delaney, of Evanston; Nettie, wife of Theodore Frazier, of Hickory, Ill., Irving and Bessie who are both at home., the former being married and conducting the farm and summer resort hotel, on Bluff Lake. Mrs. Paddock was a kind and loving wife and mother, beloved and respected by all who knew her and in her death a large number of relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss, to all of whom THE NEWS extends sincere sympathy in their hour of sorrow.

PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM.

Lewis A Paddock, proprietor of the Bluff Lake Summer Resort, which is situated in the midst of one hundred and fifteen acres of land, on section 24, Antioch Township, was born in Milwaukee, Wis, May 14,1838. His paternal grandfather, a native of Nova Scotia, died in Michigan, at the very advanced age of one hundred years. His father, Aaron G. Paddock, was born in Onondaga County, N.Y., in1806 , and remained under the parental roof until he had attained his majority. In the Empire State, in 1812, he married Susan M. Norton, who was also a native of that locality. Her father served in the War of 1812, and subsequently came West, spending his last days in the home of our subject. Having determined to seek a home in Illinois, Mr. Paddock brought his family to Chicago, but was not pleased with the place, and removed to Milwaukee, where he spent four years. He engaged in farming on the site of the present city, and then came to Lake County settling on the same farm where our subject now resides. Not a white man in this county lived west of him at that time. He was the first settler in the community. He entered a half-section of Government land, built a log cabin, and began the development of the farm which continued to be his home until his death in 1877. His excellent wife is still living, and makes her home with Lewis Savage, near Loon Lake. When Mr. Paddock came West, he journeyed from Buffalo on foot, with a rifle upon his back, and reached Chicago before the arrival of his wife came on a sailing vessel by way of the Lakes. Forty-two days had elapsed before she reached her destination. He was a strong Republican in politics, and a faithful type of the honored pioneer, to whom the country owes her present prosperity, In the family were the following children: Eleanora, now deceased; Adelia, wife of John Monroe, of Baraboo, Wis. Asa who resides near Channel Lake, in Antioch Township; Juliette; Lewis, of this sketch; George who served in the Ninety-Sixth Illinois Regiment, and is now living a retired life in Saunemiu , ILL. ; Marshall, who also resides there, served in the Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry; Albert, who served in the Ninety-sixth Illinois Regiment, and was for some months a prisoner of war, is living in Spencer, Iowa; Helen is the wife of John Rich, of Saunemin, ILL.; Addie is the wife of Lewis Savage, of Loon Lake and Richard makes his home in Chicago.

For more than half a century Lewis Paddock has resided in this county. As he was only two years old at the time of his father's settlement here, he was reared to manhood amid the wild scenes of frontier life, and with the family shared in the usual hardships of pioneer days, His boyhood days were spent upon the farm during the summer month, and in the winter season he attended the district schools, having to walk three miles, but this life was not altogether without its pleasures. From his youth Mr. Paddock has been a great lover of hunting, and in the earlier days had ample opportunity to indulge his taste for the sport. He has killed thousands of ducks, and for twelve years in company with Levi Simons, during the shooting season, hunted and supplied the market with wild game. He realized thereby a handsome profit, as well as gratifying his love for hunting. He also shared in the hard labor of the farm, and before his father's death assumed its management, displaying excellent business ability in its operation.

A wedding ceremony performed in Avon Township, in 1861, united the destinies of Lewis Paddock and Harriet Savage, who was born in Clinton County, N.Y., October 18, 1838, and belongs to one of the early established families of this county. Five children graced their union, and with the exception of Eugene, who died when ten months old, the family circle yet remains unbroken. Ella, the oldest, is now the wife of H. Delany , of Chicago, Nettie is the wife of Theodore Frazier; Irving operates the farm; and Bessie, the youngest, is still at home

When Mr. Paddock began life for himself, he had only $100 in wild-cat money, but by his own efforts he has become a substantial farmer. As before stated, he owns one hundred and fifteen acres of land, and for ten years has carried on a beautiful summer resort at Bluff Lake, where he accommodates those who leave the city during the heated summer months. In politics he is independent, supporting the man and not the party. His first Presidential vote was cast for Abraham Lincoln. He is an intelligent and enterprising citizen, public-spirited and progressive, and in the long years in which he has resided in the county has ever encouraged and supported those interests, which are calculated to benefit the community.

Civil War 1861-1865

This is taken from the PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM page 733, published in 1891

Jeremiah Savage was only ten years old when he came to Illinois. The first money which he earned was expended for a pair of shoes, He worked three weeks for the sum. Upon the farm he remained until the 1st of August 1862, when he donned the blue and joined Company C, Ninety sixth Illinois Regiment. Soon, however, he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps and did duty in Washington and Alexandria. He stood guard over President Lincoln's body, while it lay in state in the capitol and then marched down to the depot by the side of General Grant. At the close of the war he received his discharge in Washington on the 28th of June 1865 and returned to his home.

Mr. Savage lost his health in the army and since that time has been largely engaged in building boats. He resides near Bluff Lake, having there made his home for a quarter of a century. He has been twice married, having in 1875, wedded Rosa La Bo and on the 1st of February 1888, was joined in wedlock with Cora King, The Savage family have long been identified with the history of this county and well deserve mention among its early settlers.

DEATH'S GRIM HARVES

THREE OLD RESIDENTS OF THE COUNTY PASSED AWAY
JERRY SAVAGE

On Saturday morning of last week word was received here of the death of Jerry Savage, which occurred at Isabelle, Texas, where he and his wife had gone with a party of eight, some six weeks ago with the intention of spending the remainder of the winter. The exact cause of his death has not as yet been learned but it is stated that his illness commenced with a large carbuncle on the back of his neck. Mrs. Savage and those with her started for home on Saturday last but have not yet arrived although they are expected this (Wed.) afternoon or Thursday morning.

Mr. Savage was a well known and highly respected resident of the community, his home having been at Grass Lake for many years. He was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, ever ready to give aid to the needy and always willing to assist those in trouble, and he leaves a large number of friends and acquaintances who sincerely mourn his death. He was a member of the M.E. church at this place and was one of its most earnest workers.

Mr. Savage was numbered among the old veterans, having served in the civil war, and receiving an honorable discharge from his duties as a soldier. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and also one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Mack, who resides at St. Paul, Minn,. besides three brothers and many other relatives. The funeral will be held at the M.E. church here on Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock and the remains will be laid at rest in the Antioch Hillside cemetery.

OBITUARY

The burial of Jerry Savage in the Antioch cemetery of Friday last was attended by a large gathering of people who braved the drifting snow and keen wind to pay a last tribute and shed a sympathetic tear at the bier of a faithful friend and much loved comrade and neighbor.

To know Jerry was to respect and love him. To be permitted to spend a day with him at his best loved recreations--on the lakes--was to have a day of real enjoyment long to be remembered.

His magnetic personality and simple straightforward honesty made him an attractive and pleasant companion. His steady-going, whole souled friendship was well worth striving for, and once obtained, was steadfast and unchangeable.

To be Jerry's personal friend was a recommendation worth having. Everything done by him was well done, anything left in his charge was well care for and safely delivered as many a city man can testify. He was a busy man with few idle moments but never to busy to do a favor for a friend, in which he took keen pleasure.

His sterling qualities and delightful companionship, together with his well know qualifications as a hunter and guide, made him much sought for by his friends and enabled him to make many pleasant trips to distant states and territories with congenial companions in the pursuit of port and recreation.

It was on one of these trips to the extreme southeastern part of Texas, where the sun ever shines and nature is always in bloom, that the hand of fate laid heavily upon him on the form of a gigantic carbuncle on his shoulder that beat him down and sapped his strength beyond recovery.

Attended by his devoted wife (Cora) and a company of sympathetic friends who did everything for his recovery, he yielded up his life with never a complaint or spark of irritation at the irony of fate, always hopeful and patient, satisfied to accept what was in store for him without a murmur.

He was 7 years old when he came with his parents from the old home in 'york state' to Antioch township - 5 miles west of Antioch. The family moved to another farm four miles east of Antioch and some 2-3 years later to what is now known as the Wedge farm about 2 miles south of the village.

After his wife died, very often tears would stream down his face from bodily pain and heart loneliness for his departed companion, bur no querulous complaint ever escaped his lips, nor any impatient, unkind word or act towards those about him was ever indulged.

Lewis Savage, a farmer residing on section 21, Antioch Township, has made his home in the county during his entire life with the exception of the first five years, and thus he has become a well known citizen of the community, who is also favorably known, He was born in Clinton County, N.Y., in 1847, and is descended from good old Revolutionary stock. His grandfather was one of La Fayette's soldiers who aided the Colonies in their struggle for independence.

As stated our subject came to Illinois when he five years of age. The family journeyed by way of the Lakes and in the hardships and trials of pioneer life which they shared he for his part, His education was acquired in the common schools which he attended during the winter season, while in the summer months he aided his father in the development of the farm, He was only eighteen years of age when he left home and entered his country's service, enlisting in February, 1865 in Company H, One Hundred and Fifth-third Illinois Infantry, He did guard duty at Tullahoma and Memphis, Tenn., and at the latter place was discharged at the close of the war, in September.

Mr. Savage then returned to his home and farm work, and soon afterwards resumed the management of the farm. It comprises one hundred and twenty acres of land and is a well kept tract, highly cultivated and improved with excellent buildings. He was married in 1872, to Miss Ada Paddock*, Daughter of one of the earliest settlers of the county . By there union have been born three children. In his social relations Mr. Savage is a member of Burlington Post, No. 201, G.A.R. and in politics is a Republican, having supported the party since attaining his majority. He manifest an interest in all that pertains to the welfare and upbuilding of the community, and is a worthy and highly respected citizen, accounted one of the enterprising farmers of Antioch Township.

Lewis at the age of eighteen enlisted in Company II, One Hundred and Fifty - third Illinois Regiment and served about seven months at the close of war, when he returned and has since farmed. He married Ada F. Paddock and has three children, Frank E., Fabien E., and Lulu P.

SAVAGE-KING NUPTIALS

On Wed, Nov. 11 at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Jerry Savage,occurred the marriage of Miss Eva King to Mr. Frank Savage. The wedding took place a high noon in the presence of about fifty relatives and friends, Rev. E.J. Aikin of Aurora, officiating. After a bountiful wedding feast the bride and groom took the train for Chicago from which place they will go to Saunimanwhere they will spend about six weeks with relatives and friends.

The young couple received many handsome presents, including much silverware. Miss King is a well known and popular young lady of this town and the groom, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Savage, is a young man of excellent qualities who has many friends here who join with the News in wishing the happy couple a long and happy life.

The funeral of Fay Savage was held at the M. E. Church on Saturday afternoon of last week and was largely attended. The remains, were laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery.

Fabien Savage was born March 7, 1875 and died May 9, 1900. He had lived with his parents on the farm until two years ago when he took a business course at Marion University. After receiving his diploma he went as bookkeeper in the real estate office of Case & Paddock where he was up to the time of his death, Fay, as his friends always called him, was respected by all who knew him. He had many friends and no enemies, many virtues and no vises.

On Monday of this week at Chicago occurred the marriage of Miss Josephine A. Garwood to Mr. Wm. Belter.  The bride is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harm Garwood of Channel Lake and has a large circle of friends among the younger set, who although surprised to hear of her marriage extend to her their best wishes for a happy wedded life.  The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Belter who reside south of town. He is a well know young man, having lived here the greater part of his life. The many friends of the young couple were somewhat surprised when it was reported that their marriage had taken place for so quiet had the matter been kept that not even their most intimate friends had any inkling whatever of their intentions until Monday morning.  Mr. & Mrs. Belter will make their future home in this vicinity The News joins with their many friends in extending to the happy couple most hearty congratulations and best wishes for a long and happy voyage on the matrimmonial sea.

OBITUARY

Theodore A. Frazier, son of William Frazier, was born at Hickory, Lake county, Illinois, August 23, 1859. He was married on November 12, 1884, to Nettie G. Paddock, Grass Lake, Illinois. They made their home in Warren township one year, moving from there to Hickory, where they lived until the year of 1920. To this union were born three children. Upon his retirement the farm was sold and Mr. and Mrs. Frazier then moved to Bluff Lake, where they resided for five years. They then purchased the present home at Lake Villa. About a year ago Mr. Frazier's health slowly began to fail. On the evening of May 29, 1929, his

condition became serious and he was taken to the Victory Memorial hospital at Waukegan, Illinois. His wife and children were in constant attendance here, hoping for his speedy recovery, but at 10:30 Thursday morning, June 6, he willingly answered his Father's call. Mr. Frazier's many acts of kindness will long be remembered by his many friends. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow, Nettie, and their children, Mrs. Charles Griffin, Antioch; Mrs. Bert Logan, Evanston; and Walter I. Frazier, Chicago; also one brother, Thomas W. Frazier, Waukegan.
