THE ANCESTORS OF HOPE & MARY DOWNS:
Their father was Ebenezer Downs, born Apr 3, 1667 in New Haven, CT, the son of John Downs, possibly
born in Kent, England. His mother is unknown.
The children of John Downs, all born in New Haven, were:
- John born Mar 5, 1658 and died soon.
- Samuel born Oct 28, 1662
- Mary born Jan 28, 1664/65
- Ebenezer born Apr 3, 1667
- Deliverance born Apr 19 1669
- Elizabeth born Apr 19, 1669
- Hannah born Jan 19, 1670
- John born Nov 25, 1672
- Daniel born Aug 29, 1674
- Nathaniel born Dec 27, 1676
- Ruth born July 5, 1679
Ebenezer married Mary Humphreville, daughter of John Humphreville, on Nov 28, 1694 in New Haven.
Mary was born circa 1674. Ebenezer died on Mar 20, 1711 in New Haven.
The children of Ebenezer and Mary (Humphreville) Downs, all born in New Haven, were:
- Esther born Sep 5, 1695
- Hope born Mar 11, 1697
- Ebenezer born June 9, 1700, died "soon".
- Mary born Jan 22, 1701/02
- Seth born Aug 16, 1704
- Ebenezer born Mar 28 1707
- Mehitabel born Aug 23, 1709
The names "Umberfield" and "Umberville" have been used by descendants of the Humphrevilles.
Some of the children of both Downs were baptized in First Congregational Society in New Haven.
John Humphreville
John Humphreville was cousin to Hope and Mary Downs, the son of their uncle, Samuel Humphreville.

Church Graveyard, Corner of Campbell Ave & Church St, West Haven, Ct. Mr. Humphreville's stone
has sunken so deep in the ground that only the top portion can be read. It did not photo,
being of dark stone and sun in the wrong direction. The readable legend says "Here lies John Humphreville...".
John and Rebecca were founding members of Christ Church.
