Thomas Clinton (1st) was baptized "as an infant at Newport, RI, prior to 1709". Since he married Hope Downs
on August 7, 1718, we estimate his birth as about 1698 in Newport, RI. He married Hope Downs first.
Hope was born March 11, 1697/98, the daughter of Ebenezer and Mary (Humphreville) Downs.
Hope and Thomas had 5 children:
Thomas (1st) was Charged with "resisting the constable sometime in March last" in November,1725, according to New Haven County Court Records, and was found guilty.
On August 7, 1726 he was listed as a communicant of the Anglican Church at Stratford.
On December 29, 1726 he bought 85-l/2 acres in Wallingford and sold it on March 26, 1728. In this deed he called himself "of Wallingford, blacksmith".
He lived in Wallingford from 1726-1728. His mother, now married to Jeremiah Mott, may have lived there also. His brother, Joseph, and his uncle, Thomas Painter, also bought land in Wallingford.
After Hope's death in 1729, he married a "Mary--", believed to be Hope's sister, Mary Downs.
Mary was born January 22, 1701/02. They resided in West Haven. Thomas died about 1761 in West Haven.
