Like all small boys of every age, Joseph was not particularly fond of trudging the 2 miles to the schoolhouse. Passing the field where his brother Peter, more than ten years his senior, was working. He called out "Oh, Peter, tell Mammy I'm sick." But Peter quietly picked up a switch and little Joseph's legs carried him to school much faster than he had intended.

Temperance DUSTIN [Parents] was born 19 Jan 1811 in St. Armando, NY. She died 20 Aug 1855 in Aurora, Kane, IL. Temperance married Joseph George STOLP on 6 Jun 1839 in Naperville, DuPage, IL.
An ancestor, Hannah Dustin of Haverhill, Mass, was lying in bed with her week old babe. Her husband and seven children were in the fields. Mr. Dustin saw the Indians coming and told the children to run to the fort. He started for his home to save his wife and babe. As he approached, he saw the home in flames. Beleiving his wife was dead and that he could be of no assistance to her, he went to the fort to be with his children.
In the meantime, the Indians had dashed the head of the crying baby against the wall; then took Mrs. Dustin and the nurse and started for Canada. Winter came on. One night while 12 Indians wwere sleeping, Mrs. Dustin, the nurse and a boy captive, arose and with axes killed all of the Indians with the exception of two, a squaw and a young boy.
They started back to Haverhill where they arrived after about two months. They presented the ten Indian scalps to the authorities for which they recieved a fifty pound bounty. Mrs. Dustin is buried at Haverhill and there is a monument erected to her memory. Every year there is a Dustin Day in Haverhill.
