His plane went missing as a result of enemy flak, his engine cut and he
was instructed to glide toward home.  He was seen to be reducing height
at a considerable speed but soon disappeared from view.  His plane
crashed around noon 1 km from Berceto, Italy.   Earl was killed while
attempting to bale out, his parachute being caught on the wing of the
plane. A thorough search of the area failed to turn up the crash site.
The location  was not located until some time later ( November 24,1945)
and the grave of the pilot was found beside the wreckage, and the
remains exhumed, but no means  of identification was possible, as the
body was in an advance state of decomposition.. It was later
consecrated to Milan British Empire Cemetery, Plot 2, Row A, Grave 8

Further investigation:

A local inhabitant who remembered the identity  disc, said that he saw a
small boy playing with it just after the crash.  He took possession of
it, and sent it to his son, the Sindaco of Parma, who, in turn passed it
to an American Colonel in Rome, after the liberation.  When inquiries
were made to trace the disc, the Sindaco recovered it from the American,
and it was finally passed to  the searcher. The identity disc of this
pilot was traced and marked with his name and number and the connection
was -  location of the disc and the crash were matched and he is buried
in Milan War Cemetery, Italy.
