Be it Remembered, that on the Twelfth day of September 1847, personally
appeared in open Court, before the Justice of Circuit Court of the 5th
Judicial District of this State now sitting in the village of Herkimer in
said County, Michael Hartman of the town of Herkimer in said County, aged
fifty-four years and upwards; therebeing duly sworn according to law doth on
his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of
the provision made by the Act of Congress _____ of June 1832.
That he is a son of Adam Hartman who served in the war of Revolution as
herein after stated.
That his father the said Adam Hartman died on the ninth day of April in the
year one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six, in the town of German Flatts
in said County. The he died leaving him surviving the following named
children who are all over twenty-one years of age and that this Declarant is
the Administrator of the estate of his father the said Adam Hartman deceased
towit this Declarant, Conrad Hartman, Christopher Hartman, Nancy Wilder all
of the said County of Herkimer, Jacob Hartman of Jefferson County N.Y.,
Elizabeth MGinnis who resides in Canada & Catherine Gardner who resides in
Ostego County N.Y.
And this Declarant further saith that his father the said Adam Hartman was
born in Germany & immigrated to this County about the year 1760 when he was
about sixteen years of age - and that he took up his residence in said town
of German Flatts when he first came to reside in this county towit, about
fifteen years before the commencement of the war of the revolution in 1775,
& resided in said town & in what is now called the County of Herkimer until
the day of his death. That when he died he was over ninety-two years of age.
The military Regt. to which he belonged contained the Regiment of militia
commanded by Lieutenant Colnel afterwards Colonel Peter Bellinger. The names
of the Captains in said Regiment undr whom the said Adam Hartman served this
Declarant cannot specify as he ______ ______ .
The said Adam Hartman served under several engagements in the Company of
Captain Hannes (John) Mark Demouth, as well as in the Militia said Demouth
commanded a Company of Rangers. He served under general Herkimer in the
Oriskana battle in 1777 also under Colonel Harper & Dubois of the New York
State Troops. While he served in Demouth's Company in the year 1780, he was
wounded in the shoulder & in consequence of such wound and continued to
receive until the day of his death a pension under an "Invalid" Act of
Congress is well assured from his numerous conversations had with his father
& some of his contemporary soldiers, that the whole period he served for
during said war exceeded in the aggregate Twenty-four months.
