C.B. Hartman, 70, Dies in Hospital

Co-Owner of Hartman Ice Company -- Had been Ill since Nov. 30.
Clarence B. Hartman, 70, of 1851 State street, co-owner of the Hartman Ice Company at 1867 State street and one of the oldest ice dealers in this section, died this morning at 12:25 in the Mercy hospital, where he had been a patient since Nov. 30. Death was attributed to heart disease and high blood pressure.
The body was removed to the Hart funeral home.
Surviving Mr. Hartman are two brothers and two sisters, Fliyd L Hartman, Black River road; Eugene V. Hartman, 310 South Pleasant street; Mrs. Charles D. (Grace E.) Lehr, Black River road, and Miss Bess M. Hartman, 1851 State street.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 from the Hart Funeral home. Rev. Dr. George Harlan McClung, pastor of the Asbury Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Boonville cemetery.
Another brother, Charles S Hartman, died suddenly in this city Nov. 14, 1929 at the age of 55 years.
Mr. hartman owned the ice company jointly with his sister, Bess, and brother, Eugene. The company retails and wholesales ice and also maintains a locker storage business for foods.
Mr. hartman had been afflicted with the heart condition and high blood pressure for about ten years and had been under treatment in a hospital a number of times, especially during the past year.
He was born May 13, 1881, at Boonville, one of six children of the late Sanford and Christina Dorn Hartman. He married Miss Josephine Rogers of that village at Boonville in 1903. She died in Rome in 1906. Two children born of the marriage, Roger and Orris, died in infancy.
Mr Hartman spent the early part of his life at Boonville, where he attended schoola dn where he was associated with his father in the ice and trucking business. Eventually, he took over the business, but later sold it and moved to Watertown in December, 1906.
For about two years he was employed by the old Ice Company of Watertonw, Subsequently, he went into the ice business for himself with his brother, Eugene. Shortly afterward, his brother, Floyd, and then his sister, Bess, became partners in the business. Floyd left the business in 1948.
The business was started in the sprin gof 1909 at the present location, then 1833 State street. Ice houses were build on Hunt street, adjacent to a pond. In 1931, a modern ice plant for the manufacture of ice was established on State street.
As a hobby, Mr. Hartman began [roducing honey aboyt 30 years ago. Eventually, it feveloped into an extensive business and at the time of his death he maintained abot 200 hives of bees.
He was a member of the Asbury Methodist church.

Miss Bessie Hartman Expires
Miss Bessie M Hartman, 84, of Twin Oaks Drive, a former partner in the HArtman Ice Co., died at 11 pm Thursday at her home.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 pm at the Cumings Funeral Home with Rev. J Edwin Ring, pastor, First Baptist, Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery
Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-5 and 7-9 Sunday. She is survived by a brother, Floyd, Black River Road, and several nieces an dnephews. Three brothrs predeceased her, Charles in 1931, Clarence in 1951, and Eugene in 1966, and a sister, Mrs. Grace Lehr died in 1953.
Born Jan 27, 1889, in boonville, a daughter of Sanford and Christina Dorn Hartman, she taught school in the Boonville section,m moving to Watertown in 1907. She resided several years at 1851 State Street. Miss Hartman was a former partner in the Hartman Ice Co., 1867 State St., retiring in 1961. The business was started in the spring of 1909 by her brothers, Clarence and Eugene. She and her brothers, Floyd, became partners soon after the founding of teh business. Following the death of Clarence, Miss Hartman and Eugene operated the business until it was sold in Dec. 1951 to Sanford J Hartman, son of Eugene.

Mrs. Eugene V HArtman Dies
Resident of This City Expires, Aged 66
Funeral Will Be Tuesday
Mrs Anna Grotheir Hartman, 66, wife of Eugene V Hartman, 114 North Pearl avenue, died ate 6:20 pm Saturday in the House of the Good Samaritan, where she was admitted at 2:15 pm Friday. She developed a heart condition five years ago. She had been hospitalized at diferent tiems since then.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 am at the Cleveland funeral home with Rev. Graham R Hodges, pastor of Emmanuel Congregational church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9pm today.
Surviving beside her husband are a son Sanford J Hartman, Gifford street road; a sister, Mrs. Lyle (Ellen) Smith, Watertown Star route� two brothers, George Grothier, Santa Ana, Calif.; and four grandchildren, miss Diane C Priest, a nurse at the House of the Good Samaritan; and Robert E Prist, jr., both of 624 Mundy Street; and Barbara and Rodney Hartman.
A daughter, Nella Christine, wife of Robert E Priest, died July 27, 1959 at the age of 40.
Mrs. Hartman was born Sept 24, 1897 in the town of Hounsfield, a daughter of John W and Ellen M Jones Grothier. The family moved a number of times during her early life in the Watertown area and to MExico for a time. She attended city schools and was graduated from Watertown high school.
On Sept 3, 1917, she was married at her home in East Watertown, to Eugene V. Hartman, a artner in the HArtman Ice company. They formerly lived at 310 South Pleasant street before moving about ten years ago. Mr Hartman is semi-retired. He and his sister, Miss Bess Hartman, sold the business to his son, Oct 1, 1961 but he still goes daily to the company plant.
Mrs Hartman was a member of Emmanuel Congregational church where she was a Sunday school teacher for years. She was a member of Grama Gamma, a woman�s group of the church.

Floyd L. Hartman, Ice Firm Partner Dies
Floyd L Hartman, 92, black River Road, died at noon Firday at his home following a brief illness.
The funeral will be at 2 pm Sunday at the Simpson-Lundy-Cleveland Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas J. Raisner, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be toady from 7-9 at the funeral home.
Donations may be mae to the Jefferson County Hospice, PO Box 677, Watertown.
He is survived by five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Two children, John Hartman and Marjorie Entrekin, died before him.
Born Oct 22, 1894, in Boonville, a son of Sanford and Christina Dorn Hartman, he came to Watertown Aug 12, 1906 to work in the family business, the HartmanIce Company. He later became a partner in the business until 1948 when he sold his interest. He then became a self-employed cattle dealer and worked in this occupation until June 29, 1987.
In 1917 he married Emma Ryder, who died in 1979.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Emma Hartman Dies at Age 86;

Mrs Emma M Hartman, 86, Black River Road, wife of Floyd L Hartman, was probounced dead on arrival at the House of the Good Samaritan at 5:30 pm Sunday after suffering a heart attack at her home. she had been in failing health.
The funeral will be 11 am Wednesday at the Reed and Benoit Funeral home, with Rev Robert Mowatt, pastor, Clayton Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Calling house will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd L; a daughter,Marjorie,and five grandchildren. A son, John Hartman, died in 1963.
Born june 25, 1892 in Watertown a daughter of John and Ora Gardner Ryder, she was graduated from Watertown High School and worked as a secretary at the Cooper Refrigeration Manufacturing Co., Calicum, and as secretary to J B Taylor, power compnay owner in Watertown and as secretary at the Hartman Ice Co. She maried Floyd L Hartman, Aug 4, 1916, at her parents' home on Rutland Street. The couple moved to the Black River Road in 1922.
Mr Hartman was a partner in the Hartman Ice Co., until 1948 until he went into the cattle business.
