By 1888 Miles and Susan Mead had moved to Lecoma, Dent Co., Missouri. My grandfather Adelbert and Grandmother Isabella Smith Mead went to visit them when their oldest child Emma Mead was one year old. I recall my grandmother telling of the house in Missouri. The house had no windows facing the road, she said, �Because Pa Mead (Miles) did not want Ma to be able to see him come and go on his horse.� Poor Ma Mead was very ill and was almost an invalid, sitting most of the day at a table with her head in her hands. Apparently, Susan Mad had expereinced a stroke which finally took her August 20, 1900. She was buried in an unmarked grave in Alcove. Grandma Usable Mead oftern remarked that the country there was so poor and barren that the poor woman was probably buried under a pile of rocks. [ not true as Kenneth Mead visited the cemetery in 1933 and said it was typical of any country cemetery in those days.]
