Roberts County was formed in 1876 and the population in 1880 was 32 people. The Santa Fe Railroad begain traveling thru Miami about 1887/88 and the first school held in Miami soon followed. This school room was on one side of the building and a saloon on the other during the week and on Sunday it was used for Church. Previously school was held in country structures. The population had grown to about 360 by 1890. "The Roberts County School History 1876-1979" book was compiled David J Bean, Stanley Cowan, Roilene Tolbert and Effie Cowan Jenkins starting in 1974. Many others were helpful in presenting this book of valuable information concerning Roberts County schools. By 1900 the Roberts County population was about 620. The education of their children was very important to the early settlers.
