Thomas Church Cobb

(1813-aft 1880)

1.  Thomas Church COBB was born on March 11, 1813 in North Carolina.  He was the son of Archibald Cobb and Rebecca James, and grandson of Clisby Cobb of Catawba County, North Carolina.  He was listed on the Tax Rolls in 1838 in Campbell County, Tennessee.  He was already married and maintaining his own household at that time.  He appeared on the census in 1840 in Campbell County, Tennessee.  He immigrated in 1850 to Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  (On this enumeration there was one additional unidentified person in the household; one J.C. Smith, age 25, born in Tennessee.)  Thomas appeared on the census in 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.  He appeared on the census on June 22, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  On this report he stated that he was born in North Carolina, while both his parents were born in New Jersey.  The family of son James E. Cobb was also enumerated in this household at that time.  He died after June 22, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in Cobb-Vannoy Cemetery, Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  His headstone is inscribed that he moved to Texas from Campbell County, Tennessee in 1850.  Dodd City is located east of Bonham on the Lamar County line.  He was a Teamster.

He was married to Ann Louise WHEELER (daughter of Thomas WHEELER and Elizabeth Holton ELLIOTT) about 1837 in Tennessee.   This based on the birth date of the first known child of this marriage.  Ann Louise WHEELER was born on December 25, 1821 in Campbell County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1840 in Campbell County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  She appeared on the census on June 22, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  On this enumeration she declared she was born in Tennessee, and both her parents in Virginia.  She died after June 22, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Cobb-Vannoy Cemetery, Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  Thomas Church COBB and Ann Louise WHEELER had the following children:

+2   i.          Thomas Wheeler COBB (born in 1838).

3   ii.          Samuel A. COBB was born about 1842 in Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  As he does not appear again on any subsequent records, it is assumed he died unmarried and without issue.  Although of prime military age, there is no record of his having served in any capacity during the War Between the States.

+4   iii.         James E. COBB (born on November 2, 1844).

5   iv.         John O. COBB was born on August 27, 1845 in Tennessee.  He died on November 14, 1852 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in Cobb-Vannoy Cemetery, Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.

Cobb.  She appeared on the census in 1860 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died on November 9, 1873 in Fannin County, Texas.  She apparently died unmarried and without issue.  She was buried in English (Old Pioneer) Cemetery, Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.

7   vi.         Morgan COBB was born in 1849 in Knox County, Tennessee.  Morgan does not appear on the 1850 or any subsequent census.  It is assumed this individual died as a child, and therefore did not appear with the family on any census.

+8   vii.        Joseph Benton COBB Sr. (born in March 1850).

9   viii.       Hattie COBB was born about 1851 in Fannin County, Texas.  She died on August 21, 1864 in Fannin County, Texas.  She was buried in Cobb-Vannoy Cemetery, Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  For an unexplained reason she did not appear with her family on the 1860 census.
