Stephen Cobb

(1841-1911)

1.  Stephen COBB was born on April 27, 1841 in Tennessee (Polk County probably).  He was the son of John Cobb, grandson of Robert Cobb, and great grandson of Clisby Cobb of Catawba County, North Carolina.  He appeared on the census on August 29, 1850 in Polk County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Polk County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Franklin County, Arkansas.  He immigrated between 1871 and 1873 to Fannin County, Texas from Arkansas.  He appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  On this report, he stated he and both his parents were born in Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  He died on April 30, 1911 in Fannin County, Texas.  He was buried in English (Old Pioneer) Cemetery, Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.  During the War Between the States, he served in Company E, 16th Arkansas Infantry Regiment.  During his service he was wounded in the right leg and left hip.  Complications from these wounds eventually contributed to his death, per doctor affidavit.

He was married to Louinia "Viny" JOHNSTON (daughter of Joab JOHNSTON and Polly LNU (JOHNSTON)) about 1868 in Arkansas.  This based on the birth date of the first child of this marriage.

Louinia "Viny" JOHNSTON was born on December 29, 1845 in Marion County, Tennessee.  There is a discrepancy in determining her actual date of birth.  Her cemetery headstone gives the date 29 Dec 1840.  The date 1845 is stated on the 1850 census of Marion County, Tennessee; the 1900 census of Fannin County, Texas; and her application for a Texas Confederate Widow's Pension.  She appeared on the census on August 29, 1850 in Marion County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1870 in Franklin County, Arkansas.  At that time, she and husband Stephen were still yet newly married and only one child was present in the household.  She appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  By that time there were five children in the family.  On this report, she declared that she and both her parents were born in Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  This report also states she was born Dec 1845 in Tennessee.  She died on December 7, 1938 in Myra, Cooke County, Texas.   At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter Sarah Jane Tucker.  She was buried in English (Old Pioneer) Cemetery, Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.

[NOTE: Her family name was actually JOHNSTON.  It was shortened to JOHNSON sometime after 1850.]  Stephen COBB and Louinia "Viny" JOHNSTON had the following children:

+2                i.   William Robert COBB (born on May 4, 1869).

+3                ii.   Sarah Jane COBB (born on March 29, 1871).

4               iii.   Maggie COBB was born on May 29, 1873 in Texas.  She appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She is not found on any subsequent census report with this family, therefore it is assumed she had either died or married prior to 1900.

5               iv.   Mary Alice COBB was born on October 15, 1875 in Texas.  She appeared on the census on June 4, 1880 in Fannin County, Texas.  She is not found on any subsequent census report with this family, therefore it is assumed she either died or had married prior to 1900.

+7               vi.   Elisha Lafayette COBB (born on February 20, 1880).

She was then married to Henry Thomas TUCKER (son of Woodford TUCKER and Rachel HORTON) on August 17, 1893 in Hunt County, Texas.  This was the second marriage for both.  They each had children by their previous spouses.

The marriage of Sarah Jane Cobb to Henry Thomas Tucker represents a "cross-connection" between two separate Fannin County Cobb families.  Henry Thomas Tucker’s first marriage was to America V. Walker, by whom he had four children, including James Anderson Tucker. James married Eleanor Cobb, daughter of Monroe Cobb and Martha Olive Trew, and granddaughter of Carter William Cobb and Elizabeth Reynolds. Carter was the son of David Cobbs and Freeda Presha Mayfield. Click HERE to go to the report on the family of David Cobbs. You must use the 'Back' feature of your browser to return here.

ELLIS and Josephine KYLE) on September 10, 1899 in Fannin County, Texas.  There were seven children produced from this marriage, but only two are known.  Myrtle Pearl ELLIS was born on October 24, 1877 in Milam County, Texas.  She appeared on the census in 1900 in Fannin County, Texas.  John Franklin COBB and Myrtle Pearl ELLIS had the following children:
