George Cobb Sr.

(c1810-1853)

1.  George COBB Sr was born about 1810 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  He was the son of Robert Cobb, and grandson of Clisby Cobb and wife Margaret Young of Catawba County, North Carolina.  He appeared on the census in 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  On this enumeration George and Susan were still yet newly married and the household included only 1 male 15-20 yrs, and 1 female 20-30 yrs.  He appeared on the census in 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  On this enumeration the household included 2 males under 5 yrs, and 1 male 40-50 yrs; 1 female under 5 yrs, 1 female 5-10 yrs, and 1 female 30-40 yrs.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Dade County, Georgia.  He died in 1853 in Georgia.  He was a Carpenter.

Sources differ on the name of George's father.  Some say Joseph.  This is probably based on the fact that one Joseph Cobb had a very large family in McMinn County, Tennessee at the same time Robert was living there.  However, research has revealed there were two unrelated Cobb families there simultaneously. Robert Cobb was the progenitor of the second family.  He lived in that part of McMinn County that fell in Polk County when the latter was created in 1839, and thereafter he is found in Polk.

Hodge's history of Fannin County, Texas, says George's father was Benjamin.  In an interview given for the "Biographical Souvenir of Texas" in 1889, George's son William Hamilton Cobb stated George's father was Robert Cobb, a veteran of the War of 1812.  Research has established that William knew best who his own grandfather was!  However, Hodge was not too far off in this instance.  George was the nephew of the Benjamin M. Cobb who died in Fannin County in 1858, and grandson of Clisby Cobb and wife Margaret H. Young.

Further, LDS records show that George immigrated to Texas from Tennessee, in 1878.  This is an obvious error since he died in 1853. However there may be some credence to it in other respects.  Members of this family began migrating to Fannin County in the early 1850's. Sons Lafayette and Charles Robert Cobb moved there between 1878-1880. Also, another son, George Jr was born in 1845, about who there is as yet no other information.

George was married to Susannah "Susan" AMOS (daughter of John AMOS) on August 12, 1829 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  The bondsman for this marriage was one William Adams.  Susannah "Susan" AMOS was born in 1811 in North Carolina.  She appeared on the census in 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1840 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Dade County, Georgia.  She died in 1868 in Texas.  In his 1889 interview for "A Biographical Souvenir of Texas", William Hamilton Cobb stated that his mother "Susan Amos" died in Texas in 1868.  This presents a mystery.  How and when Susan got to Texas is as yet unknown.  George COBB Sr and Susannah "Susan" AMOS had the following children:

2                i.   Mary Ann COBB was born about 1833 in Tennessee (McMinn County probably).  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Dade County, Georgia.

4               iii.   John COBB was born about 1837 in Tennessee (McMinn County probably).  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Dade County, Georgia.

+7               vi.   Charles Robert "Uncle Bob" COBB Sr (born on September 8, 1842).
