Margaret Cobb was the daughter of Solomon and Catherine Dellinger.  She was married twice; (1st) She married James W. Ward on 18 September 1860 in Lincoln County.  He was deceased by 1870.  They had three children, the Ward children shown above being the two youngest.  (2nd) She married Easton Robert Cobb in Lincoln County on 21 December 1870.  The two Cobb children listed above were the product of that marriage.  Easton was himself deceased by 1880, and Margaret had returned to her parent’s household.

Easton Robert Cobb was the son of John Cobb and Sarah Bumgarner, grandson of Benjamin M. Cobb and Violetta Morris, and great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.

Margaret died 22 October 1922 in Lincoln County.  Son William Cobb disappeared after this enumeration.  Daughter Mary “Minnie” eventually married George R. Hoyle and was still living in Lincoln County as late as 1930.

Beverly C. Cobb was the son of Joseph Cameron Cobb and Margaret Eliza Butts, the grandson of William Halsey Cobb and Jane Connely, and the great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.  He was born in Lincoln County and lived there his entire life.  He was married twice; (1st) He married Jane “Jennie” McBee, daughter of Vardry Alexander McBee and Margaret Elizabeth Sumner, probably not long before this enumeration.  She was born 22 March 1850 in Lincoln County, and died there 12 December 1881.  She is buried at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Lincolnton.  She had one child from a previous marriage to John G. Justice, daughter Lizzie Justice shown above.  (2nd) Beverly married May “Last Name Unknown” before 1891 in Lincoln County.  She survived him and lived in Lincolnton until after 1910, when she moved to Portsmouth, Virginia with all her children.  There were four children from this marriage ... Margaret about 1891, Catherine in 1895, Mary in 1899, and Beverly Jr in 1902.

Lawson Henry Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb Jr and Leanah Hope, grandson of Robert Cobb Sr and Elenor Phillips, great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County.

There is much information available on this family after this census enumeration.  Refer to succeeding chapters.

Lawson and Laura had eight children, four being born after this enumeration ... Lucy in 1885, Seymore in 1887, Joseph in 1889, and Mary in 1891.

Beverly married Fannie “Last Name Unknown” about 1896.  They lived in York

County, SC for a number of years, but were in Cherokee County, SC by 1920.  They had five children, most of who appear to have lived and died in Cherokee County.

James C. “Jim” Cobb married about 1899 to Gertie Byars, probably in York County, SC.  They also lived in Cherokee County, SC for a while, but by 1930 were living in Richland County, South Carolina.  They had nine children.

It is known daughter Fanny eventually married John J. Guyton and moved to Cleveland County.  John was born 20 March 1875, and died 01 June 1944.  Fanny was born 15 January 1879, and died 30 October 1954.  They are both buried in the Mountain Rest Cemetery in Cleveland County.

This is the first appearance of this family in the region, and represents a totally new Cobb migration into the Lincoln County area.  Benjamin F. Cobb was born in 1826, in Wayne County, North Carolina, the son of Enoch Cobb and wife Mary, both born about 1786 in North Carolina.  By 1840, Enoch had moved his family to Duplin County.

Although Enoch had moved to Robeson County by 1860, Benjamin was still living in Duplin as late as 1870.  Sometime after that he moved to Catawba County.  He married about 1850 to Winifred Loftin, the daughter of Major C.R. Loftin of Lenoir County.

Benjamin and Winifred had thirteen children, two of who did not move to Catawba County.  They were Howell, born 1851, and Benjamin, born 1864.  In 1880, both brothers were living in New Hanover County, North Carolina.

Additional information is available for only two more children.  Charles D.M. Cobb married shortly before this enumeration and was living in Catawba County.  Mary C. Cobb, born 1854, was not listed in her parent’s home, but she was living nearby.  She was employed as a schoolteacher, and was sharing a house with three other teachers.

William Rufus Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County.  He was married twice; (1st) He married about 1848 to Martha Linebarger, who died in March 1862.  (2nd) Rufus married Sophia P. Abernathy on 20 July 1862 in Catawba County.

Of the five children from James’ first marriage, only James was still at home at the time of this census.  Two daughters had married since the last enumeration in 1870 ... Charlotte Virginia married Miles Theodore Sanders / Saunders, and Araminta married on 20 March 1879, Lewis Franklin Reinhardt.

There is one child missing from the above enumeration ... Junius William Cobb who was born 24 June 1879.  His omission is unexplained.

John Alexander in 1881 and Eva Lee in 1886.  By the time of the next available census in 1900, the two elder children (Patrick Vann and Epsey Louvina) will have married and moved out.

Sinah was born 01 January 1842, and died 29 September 1881.  William was born 26 May 1833, and died 08 April 1919.  Both are buried in the Eastview-Newton Cemetery in Catawba County.

It is not uncommon to find this surname spelled as “Scronce” or something similar.

Andrew would be the first of Barbara’s children to leave home.  He married Harriet Jane Quinn on 06 January 1881 in Cleveland County.   Albertus F. Cobb would marry about 1884, to Mary J. William Cobb’s ancestry is not positively proven, but it was not what it is commonly reported.  Researchers have held that he was the grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County, through Ambrose’s son William.  That theory has been conclusively proven false, as explained in a previous chapter.  It is probable William was the son of John Cobb, and grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.  DNA analysis would be required to confirm.

William was married twice; (1st) Martha Harmon, and (2nd) Catherine Collins, the widow of Thomas Howell.  The children shown above were hers by her first marriage and the two she had by William Cobb.

This is the last record of William Cobb, and since he had been a resident of Cleveland County since 1850, it is presumed he died there sometime before the next available census in 1900.  There is also no further record of Catherine or daughter Florence.  However, son Thomas Cobb married about 1896, and was living in Gaston County as late as 1930.

Viana McDuffy Gardner married John Harmon Cobb on 20 December 1860 in Cleveland County.  He was the son of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  He died in 1875, presumably in Cleveland County.  The children shown above are all those known to be the product of John and Viana’s marriage.

Sometime before 1900, Viana moved to Gaston County where she reportedly died in 1918, in the home of her daughter and son in law, Martha and Robert Craig.  It is said that son John moved to Alabama about 1900.

Robert and Martha Cobb Craig were still living in Gaston County as late as 1930.

Son William Pinkney Cobb married twice; (1st) Sarah Jane Huffstickler about 1887, and (2nd) Anna L. Quinn.  He lived in Gaston County for a number of years, but was back in Cleveland by 1930, and died there in 1948.

Son Anson B. Cobb lived in Cleveland County all his life.  He married about 1889 to Genora E. Wilson, by who he had nine children.  He died in 1943.

Why Leanah was named as the head of the household is unexplained.  Perhaps the census taker was in a mood to list members according to age, or perhaps Robert was disabled and no longer functioning as the active head of the family.

Robert and Leanah had six children, John shown above being the youngest.  Their oldest child Harriet P. was born in 1844.  It is known she never married and her omission from this enumeration is unexplained.  Son Lawson Henry Cobb married about 1871, and moved to Lincoln County.  By the time of this enumeration daughter Sarah Frances had already been married for almost fifteen years to John Lemaster.  Son Wesley marrried in 1878, and was living not far away in Gaston County.  Daughter Georgiana was born about 1858, and married John Hays about 1877.  They were living next door to her parents at this time.

Sarah Francis was the daughter of Robert Cobb and Leanah Hope, granddaughter of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, great granddaughter of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and great-great granddaughter of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County.

It is particularly noted that this family was living next door to the family of Charles Cobb, above.  One cannot help but speculate that Charles was a younger brother of Sarah Francis.  The question would then be, “How did he avoid being enumerated on the 1860 and 1870 enumerations in his parent’s household?”

This woman is not identified.  The fact she was living just a few doors from Wesley Cobb, above, gives rise to speculate she may have been a relative somehow.  If the census taker is to be trusted, she was too old to be Wesley’s older sister Harriet who was born about 1844.

William Wilson Cobb was the son of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  He married Frances Julia Barnes about 1866, probably in McDowell County where they were living at the time of the 1870 census.  She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary J. Barnes.  They had only the four children listed above. This entire family remained in Rutherford County.  Son Thomas Auston Cobb was born 29 August 1866, and died 14 June 1888.  He is buried at Montford’s Cove Baptist Church in Rutherford County.  Daughter Alice disappeared after this enumeration.  Larah married Ichabod Keeter in 1895, and afterwards disappeared.

Sarah “Sallie” was born 17 July 1873, and died 24 August 1960.  She married Ulysses E. Keeter in 1895.  He was born 16 July 1872, and died 28 September 1956.  They are both buried in the Rutherfordton City Cemetery.  They had two children, including a daughter Hettie born about 1900 and apparently died as a child.  The other was a son Zora O. Keeter.  He was born 10 September 1896, and died 16 January 1940.  He is buried with his parents.  He was a US Army veteran of the First World War.  He evidently never married and died without issue.

Catherine A. Lonergan was the widow of Dr. Benjamin Morris Cobb who died in York County, South Carolina in 1868.  He was the son of John Cobb and Sarah Bumgarner, the grandson of Benjamin M. Cobb and Violetta Morris, and the great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.  Catherine moved her family to Charlotte after the 1870 census, when they were listed in York County, South Carolina.

Catherine and Benjamin had eight children.  Son Thomas Benjamin was born 10 May 1857, and died 28 February 1873.  By the time of this enumeration son Charles had already been married to Mary Ann Frew for more than a decade; and, daughter Annie had married a Mr. Sprinkle since the last enumeration in 1870.

There would several significant changes in this family within the next few years.  Catherine Lonergan Cobb was born 07 April 1825 in Tipperary, Ireland.  She died 12 August 1888 in Mecklenburg County.  Son Charles E. Cobb was born 23 April 1848, and died 22 June 1885.  His wife, Mary Ann Frew, was born about 1848, and died in March 1922.  They are both buried in Rock Hill Cemetery in York County, South Carolina.  They had one child, son Morris Cobb who was born 23 August 1879, and died in January 1963.  He is buried with his parents.  He never married and died without issue.

Daughter Annie was born 30 November 1849, and died 18 May 1886.  She married Mr. Sprinkle.

Daughter Mary Frances was born 16 November 1853, and died 04 February 1886, probably in Mecklenburg and apparently unmarried.  George Morris Cobb was born 16 January 1861, and died 31 July 1887.  Edmund Lonergan Cobb was born 09 February 1865, and died 13 January 1897.

Additional information is available for John Walter Cobb.  He remained in Mecklenburg County the remainder of his life.  He was born 30 September 1855, and died 09 November 1926.  He married Mary Louise Grose on 15 October 1885 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  She was born in 1860 in Maryland.  They had six children, of who only four lived beyond infancy.  Daughter Mary Louise was born 13 July 1886, and married 30 June 1909 to Samuel Louis Diggle.  They were still living in Mecklenburg in 1920.  John Walter Cobb Jr was born 16 November 1887, and died 02 November 1918 in France while serving with the 502nd Engineer Regiment.  He is buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery at Thiaucourt, France.  Loretto Elizabeth Cobb was born 13 November 1899, and died 08 June 1914.  Anita Frances was born 27 January 1893, and died 19 June that same year.  Edward Ralph Cobb was born 16 October 1897, and died 28 July 1898.  Frederick Charles Cobb was born 26 January 1895.  He married 07 November 1930 in Columbia, South Carolina, to Virginia Irene Munnerlyn.

Daniel was the son of John G. Cobb and his first wife Rocinda “Last Name Unknown”.  DNA analysis has shown that the descendants of John G. Cobb share the same ancestry as the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

“Jim” and Sarah had three more children after this enumeration ... John in 1881 ... Janie in 1883 ... and Haskell in 1885.

Minnie Lee was still unmarried and living with her parents in York in 1910.  Afterwards she disappeared.  There is no record of daughter Janie after 1900.  Sons John and Haskell were both still living in York County as late as 1930.

Margaret Caroline Childers was the widow of George Washington Goforth Cobb, one of three men from York County grouped as brothers and allegedly the sons of a William Cobb and Elizabeth Goforth.  A previous chapter goes into this claim in detail.

George and Margaret were married and living in York District, South Carolina by 1840 per census.  They had ten children.  A diligent effort to find Margaret on an 1870 census has proved fruitless, but the following is known about their children:

1.   James A. born 1843.  Unmarried and living in York County as late as 1870.

2.   Sarah born 1845 married Hiram Moss.  Living in Union County, SC in 1870.

3.   Nancy born 1847.  No record after 1860 census in York District.

4.   Elizabeth P. born about 1849 married James Elliott.  Living in York County 1870.

5.   Rachel born about 1850.  In 1870 with sister Sarah in Union County, SC.

6.   Jane born about 1853. No record after 1860 in York District.

7.   Mary born about 1855.  No record after 1860 census in York District.

8.   Rebecca born about 1857.  Listed above as Mary R.  Not found in 1870.

9.   Margaret born about 1860.  In 1870, living with sister Elizabeth Elliott.

10. Preston Goforth listed above.  Since his father died in 1863, the age is obviously incorrect.  He was more likely born about 1862.  He married and was living in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1920, but totally disappeared afterwards.

Sallie was Sarah J. Cobb, daughter of George Washington Goforth Cobb and Margaret Caroline Childers, above.  After Hiram and Sarah married they lived for some years in Union County, South Carolina.

This concludes the examination of the 1880 census for the general Lincoln County area.  One new Cobb family has moved in since the 1870 census ... that of Dr. Benjamin F. Cobb in Catawba County.  He lived in Duplin County, North Carolina prior to his relocation into this area.
