Calvin and Rebecca had five children; Joseph C. 1877 ... John Archie 1879 ... Callie M. 1883 ... Thomas B. “Sylvester” 1887 ... and Connie (Cordia ?) in 1894.  This enumeration is the last record of Joseph.  By the time of this census Thomas had married and was living in his own household (see below).  Connie had also disappeared and it is assumed she had either married or died.

Hayden C. Cobb was a direct descendant of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina, although he was a recent arrival in the area being considered here.  He was the son of John Milton Cobb (1856-1908), the grandson of Milton Hampton Denmark Cobb (1826-1910), the great-grandson of Andrew Ambrose Cobb (1804-1844), and the great-great grandson of John S. Cobb (1759-1841) who was the son of Ambrose.  John was born in Halifax County, Virginia, and moved to Lincoln County with his parents in 1777.  He had periods of service in the American Revolution from both states.  He married Frances Smith in 1786, in Spartanburg District, South Carolina.  By 1800, he was a resident of the Pendleton District.  The 1830 census shows him a resident of Pickens District, which was created from Pendleton in the 1820’s.

A comparison of this enumeration to the 1930 census reveals that Ella Abernathy, above, was actually Hayden’s mother in law.

The family of Hayden Cobb was still living in Caldwell County as late as 1930.

James A. first appears on the 1900 census of York County, South Carolina.  By 1910, he had moved to Gaston County, North Carolina.  He married in Gaston in 1914, to Myrtle Gladden, listed above.  She was born about 1896, and died between 1926 and 1930.

James and Myrtle had five children: Mary 1915 ... Hoke J. 1917 ... Paul H. 1919 ... Martha in 1922 ... and Rachel C. 1926.

Sometime after 1930, James married Mary Aileen Stewart.  The obituary for son Paul Cobb seems to indicate there were at least nine children by his father’s second wife ... Robert ... Albert ... Emma ... Sarah ... Jimmie ... Walter ... Ruth ... and Mary Dell.  It is possible that some of these children were actually the product of a previous marriage.

John Walter Cobb was the son of Benjamin Morris and Catherine Lonergan, the grandson of John Cobb and Sarah Bumgarner, the great grandson of Benjamin M. Cobb and Violetta Morris, and the great-great grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.

John was born 30 September 1855, and died 09 November 1926 in Mecklenburg County.  He married Mary Louise Grose in Mecklenburg on 15 October 1885.  She was born 1860 in Maryland, and was still living in Charlotte as late as 1930.

Preston Goforth Cobb was the son of George Washington Goforth Cobb and Margaret Childers.  This enumeration is the last record of both he and wife Carrie.

They had nine children; Lillian 1893 ... James Corbett 1894 ... Grover H. 1895 ... Paul 1898 ... Gertie 1901 ... May R. 1903 ... Tollie 1908 ... Gladys 1912 ... and “Brother” in 1913.  Examining the various census records for this region, I have found numerous instances of a child being named Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, First, Last, etc.  Therefore, I am quite certain that “Brother” was not this individual’s actual name.  The failure to locate him on the 1930 census results in his not being identified.

Sons James and Grover both married about 1915.  Grover was also living in Mecklenburg County at the time of this enumeration.  Both were living in Gaston County in 1930.

Avery McDuff Cobb was the son of William Rufus Cobb and Sophia P. Abernathy, the grandson of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great grandson of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County.

William was the born in Catawba County about 1865.  He lived in Caldwell County for some years before moving to Mecklenburg.  He was married twice.  (1st) He married Ada E. Kale on 27 March 1887.  She was born about 1871, and died in 1900.  She bore six children; Eva 1886 ... William E. 1889 ... Florence 1891 ... Bessie 1895 ... Gladys Faye 1897 ... and an infant female in February 1900, who apparently died shortly after birth.  (2nd) Avery married Anna G. Kendall on 29 September 1901. He had seven children by her; Joe W. 1903 ... Grady 1907 ... twins Jessie E. and James D. 1911 ... Mary S. 1918 ... Hattie L. 1921 ... and Cecil L. in 1928.

Daughter Gladys Faye, from the first marriage, married Hiram M. Hanvey about 1918.  They had five children before her death in 1929.  Hiram was born 19 November 1897, and died in April 1963 in Alabama.  Their children were Helen 1919 ... Goldie 1921 ... Thomas L. 1922 ... George Beaufort 1923 ... and Douglas in 1926.  There is no record of any of Gladys’ siblings after the 1910 census of Caldwell County, North Carolina.

Son James D., from Avery’s second marriage, apparently died young as there is no record of him after this enumeration.  Avery and the rest of his family was still living in Mecklenburg County as late as 1930.

Cobb, also of York County, whose descendants are DNA-matched to the pedigree of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County.  It is known James Cobb was married twice, and that Elizabeth was a child of his yet unknown first wife.  His second wife was Jane Ramsey.

Albertus F. Cobb was the son of James S. Albertus married Mary J. Morgan about 1884.  She was deceased by the time of this enumeration.  They had eight children; Charles B. 1885 ... Forest F. 1886 ... James Ernest 1889 ... William Wilson Cobb was the son of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  As explained in an earlier chapter, it is believed that the elder William was the son of John Cobb, and grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.

William Wilson was born 29 April 1842, and died 08 July 1927.  He is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Rutherford County.  During the War Between the States, he served in Company G, 49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment.  Soon after the conflict he married Frances Julia Barnes.  She was born 16 January 1848, and died 25 February 1926.  She is buried beside her husband.

William and Julia had four children.  Thomas Auston was born 29 August 1866, and died 14 June 1888.  He is buried at Montford’s Cove Baptist Church in Rutherford County.  There is no record of Alice after the 1880 census.  Sarah and Larah apparently married brothers; Sarah to Ulysses E. Keeter on 15 September 1895, and Larah to Ichabod S. Keeter on 24 March 1895.

William’s obituary lists a Mrs. J.R. Johnson of Charlotte as a surviving daughter.  This could have been either daughter Alice or Larah, as there is no record of the latter after her marriage to Ichabod Keeter.  He was living with daughter Sarah at the time of his death.

This family had been in Spartanburg County since at least 1860.  Identifying its members is a challenge.  The 1860 census of Spartanburg District shows a J.A. Cobb, age 32, listed as the head of household.  He was deceased by 1870, as his wife Elizabeth was then listed as the head of the household.  In 1860, this couple had three children; Martha 1853 ... Nancy 1855 ... and Mary 1858.  In 1870, Elizabeth’s household showed the same three children plus William 1862, and Eddie born 1877.

In 1880, Elizabeth’s household listed herself and all five children except for William.  Also, Martha married in 1875 to James T. Wood and they were living nearby.

It can only be deducted that Eddie was a child of Nancy, and that he was born out of wedlock.  Eddie is listed as the widowed head of household on the above enumeration, and Nancy is again listed as his mother.  Hazel and Grace were Eddie’s children by a deceased previous wife.  In 1910, Nancy and her sister Mary were living in the household of their sister Martha Wood.  Mary died in 1911 and is buried at Zoar Methodist Church in Spartanburg County.

From that time on Nancy lived with her son Eddie.  She was born 15 April 1859, and died 23 March 1941.  She is buried at Zoar Methodist Church with her mother Elizabeth, sister Mary, and brother William who died in 1884.

James William Cobb was the son of Thompson Cobb and Cordelia Goode.  Thompson was the son of the widow Nancy Cobb found on census reports for Cleveland County, North Carolina in 1850 – 1860 – and 1870.  DNA analysis of descendants of Thompson Cobb shows a link to the lineage of Henry Cobb “the Elder” of early Barnstable, Massachusetts.

James was born 04 November 1873, and died 28 August 1941.  He is buried at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church in Cherokee County, South Carolina.  In 1898, he married Jane Ann Taylor who was born 10 November 1867, and died 01 January 1946.  She is buried beside her husband.

Thompson and Jane had five children, all listed above.  All except Pearlie are known to also be buried at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church.

Andrew and Hazey had five children; Mary Lee 1884 ... Elizabeth O. 1893 ... Roy 1894 ... George Scott Cobb was the son of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  He was born about 1847, probably in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  He died 20 February 1927 in York County.  By 1870 he had married a Rachel “Last Name Unknown” and had moved to Union County, South Carolina.  By 1880, he was living in York County.  Rachel was born in 1848, and died 07 January 1917.

George and Rachel had seven children; Avlona E. 1871 ... William A. 1873 ... Smith Auston 1874 ... Lula E. 1877 ... George M. 1879 ... John 1882 ... and Bertha in 1888.  Avlona, Lula, and George apparently died quite young, as there is no record of them after the 1880 census.  Smith Auston married Mary E. Burns in 1904, and they were living nearby at the time of this census.

Son John Cobb also married about 1905, and was living nearby.  The children Benetta and Elizabeth shown above were his.

* You will note that the census taker erroneously spelled the name “COFF” on this enumeration.

James C. Cobb was the son of Lawson Henry Cobb, the grandson of Robert Cobb and Leanah Hope, the great grandson of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the great-great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great-great grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

James was born in May 1879 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died 13 June 1950 in Richland County, South Carolina.  He married Gertie Byars about 1899, probably in Cherokee County, South Carolina.  They lived with her parents for a period, but by 1910 were in York County.  Sometime after that they relocated to Richland County, and were still living there as late as 1930.

James and Gertie had nine children, and employed a unique method of naming them; “Brother” 1903 ... James “Son” 1906 ... Lula “Sister” 1907 ... Peggy 1909 ... Terley (female) 1911 ... Paul 1913 ... Arthur 1915 ... Anabeth 1918 ... and Kennedy in 1924.

Samuel J. Cobb is not identified.  Due to the fact he named a son Ambers, there is a strong temptation to say he was in some way descended from the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

He was born in 1881, and died 24 May 1952 in Cherokee County, South Carolina.  He first appears on the 1910 census of Cleveland County, North Carolina.  He married Mattie Philbeck about 1903.  Her parents are listed in his household above.

Sam and Mattie had seven children; Lori Ann 1905 ... Ambrus 1908 ... Evie 1912 ... Coy Thomas 1916 ... Mary 1918 ... Vannie (male) 1923 ... and Lois in 1926.  This enumeration is the last record of Lori and Evie.  All the rest of the family were still living in Cherokee County as late as 1930.

Lawson Henry Cobb was the son of Robert Cobb and Leanah Hope, the grandson of Robert Cobb and Elenor Phillips, the great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great grandson of Ambrose Cobb (Sr) from the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Lawson was born in August 1842 in that part of Lincoln County, North Carolina that became Gaston County.  He married about 1871 to Laura “Last Name Unknown”.  She was deceased by 1910.  He lived in Lincoln County until after 1880, when he moved his family to Cherokee County, South Carolina.  This enumeration is the last record of him, and shows he was an elderly widower maintaining his own household.  It is presumed he died not long after and is buried in Cherokee County.

Lawson and Laura had nine children; Mamie 1872 ... Beverly (male) 1872 ... James C. 1879 ... Fanny 1879 ... Minnie 1882 ... Lucy 1885 ... Seymore 1887 ... Joseph 1889 ... and Mary 1891.

Mamie was born 09 June 1872, and died 19 December 1926.  She is buried in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  Fanny was born 15 January 1879, and died 30 October 1954.  She is buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Cleveland County, with her husband John J. Guyton who she married in 1903.  Minnie married John O. Hambright in 1905.  There is no record of  Joseph, or Mary after 1910.

Sons Beverly and Seymore were still living in Cherokee County as late as 1930.  Son James moved to Richland County.
