It was extremely difficult to identify these two young Cobb males, until after examining several successive census reports.  They were brothers and the sons of Carley Cobb and Ollie Short, grandsons of William Pinkney Cobb and Sarah Huffstickler, great grandsons of John Harmon Cobb and Vianna McDuffy Gardner, and great-great grandsons of William Cobb and Martha Harmon.  As stated in an earlier chapter, it is believed that William Cobb was the son of John Cobb, and grandson of Clisby Cobb and Margaret Halsey Young.

Carley Cobb was born 02 July 1888, and died 01 March 1918.  He was still single and living with his parents in 1910 in Gaston County.  Thus he married, had all his children, and then died between the census enumerations of 1910 and 1920.  Carley’s widow, Ollie, married her second husband, John Short, in 1919.  In 1920, the census taker erroneously listed all of Carley Cobb’s children as being named Short.  Thus, this enumeration is the first record of these two children as being named Cobb.

Carley and Ollie had four children.  Charles “Charley” was born 28 March 1911, and died 03 March 1999.  He married Eula Mae Oliver.  She was born 24 February 1922, and died 23 March 2000.  They are both buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery near King’s Mountain in Cleveland County, North Carolina.

Mamie Cobb was born in 1913, and died 28 February 1939.  She is also buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery.  She apparently never married and died without issue.

Hunter Cobb was born 01 October 1915, and died 09 October 1989.  He is also buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Russell Cobb was born 07 August 1917, and died 11 January 1998.  He married Evalee “Last Name Unknown”.  She was born 30 August 1926, and died 31 July 1999.  They are both buried at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

These Cobbs are yet un-identified.  Albert Campbell was living in Mecklenburg County in 1920, and at that time daughter Florence was still unmarried.  Since son Edward P. Cobb was born about 1921, Florence and Cobb must have married quite soon after the 1920 census.  This gives cause to think he must have also been a resident of Mecklenburg County in 1920.  However, the only Cobb family there at that time was that of John Walter Cobb and Mary Louise Grose, and their children are all supposedly all accounted for.

Also, the W.J. Cobb above was living quite near to the Campbell’s at the time of this enumeration, and it would seem he was somehow connected.  He cannot be located in 1920.

John E. Cobb was the son of Daniel James Cobb and Sarah Jackson, and the grandson of the John G. Cobb who first appears on the 1850 census of York District, South Carolina.  DNA analysis has shown that descendants of John G. Cobb are genetically linked to the pedigree of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

John E was born in York County, and apparently lived there his entire life.  He was married twice.  Son James L., shown here, was the only known child of the first marriage to Janie “Last Name Unknown” who was deceased by 1913.

John and his second wife Cora had four children, all listed here.  The elderly Sarah Cobb shown in this household was John’s widowed mother, Sarah Elizabeth Jackson.

The identification of this family requires some examination, and we must begin with Nancy J. Cobb, the elder female shown in this household.  She was born about 1856 - 57, and is first positively identified in the household of her parents, J.A. and Elizabeth Cobb in 1860, in Greenville District, South Carolina.  And there is the first clue ... her maiden name was Cobb.  In that same household were her sisters Martha and Mary.

By 1870, Nancy’s father was deceased and she and sisters Martha and Mary were still listed in the household of their widowed mother Elizabeth in the Beech Springs Township of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  By 1880, sister Martha had married James T. Wood, but Nancy and Mary were still living with Elizabeth in the Beech Springs Township of Spartanburg County ... and Nancy was still unmarried.  At that time, in that same household, was a young male Eddie Cobb, born about 1877-78.

Thirty years later, in 1910, sisters Nancy and Mary Cobb were listed as unmarried sisters in law in the household of James T. and Martha Wood in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  By then Eddie was a grown man and out on his own.  I have been unable to positively identify him on the 1910 census, but he may have been living in Florida at that time.

Ten years later, in 1920, Nancy is enumerated in the household of E.S. Cobb, age 42, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  She is listed as the mother of E.S., who was by then a widower with daughters Hazel and Grace.

There were no changes in the status of this family since 1920, and the mystery is solved.  The individual listed as Addie Cobb, above, was a male, and was the Eddie Cobb that first appeared on the 1880 census in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  Nancy was in fact his mother, but she had never been married.  She was erroneously listed as a widow.

The ancestry of John P. Cobb is not known.  He is first positively identified on the 1910 census of Anderson County, South Carolina, married to his first wife Mary J. who was deceased by 1916, when he married Lola, above.

In 1920, John was living in Elbert County, Georgia.  It is speculative that his family moved to Spartanburg somewhere around 1926.

Sons Claude and Fred were the children of John’s first wife, while Helen was the child of his second wife Lola.

James C. Cobb was the son of Lawson Henry Cobb, grandson of Robert Cobb Jr and Leanah Hope, great grandson of Robert Cobb Sr and Elenor Phillips, great-great grandson of James Cobb and Sarah Beach, and the great-great-great grandson of the Ambrose Cobb (Sr) found on the 1790 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

James was born in May 1879 in Lincoln County.  By 1900 he was living in Cherokee County, South Carolina, where he married Gertie Byars.  In 1910 they were living in York County, but sometime after that moved to Richland.

James and Gertie had nine children:

1.      “Brother” born in 1903.  No record after 1910.

2.      James born in 1906.  No record after 1920.

3.      Lula born in 1907.  No record after 1920.

8.      Anabeth born in 1919.  No record after this enumeration.

9.      Kennedy born in 1924.  No record after this enumeration.

This brings us to the end of this study.  I make no claim of 100% accuracy; but I’m confident to say 90%.  I always welcome additions and corrections.
