Adam CODDINGTON 3950,3004,3951

  General Notes:

Adam "Codington" appears to have been enumerated twice in the 1850 census, in both Cambria and Lockport, Niagara Co., New York. The Cambria household lists Adam (49) with occupation "farmer," Eliza E. (age 39), Elizabeth (21), Mariah (18), Elizabeth (again, 16), Joseph (16), Mercy (11), Adam (7), Harriet (4), and Ephraim (2). The Lockport household lists Adam (52) with occupation "grocer," Eliza E. (42), Wm. M. (20), Ann M. (18), Mary E. (15), Joseph (12), Nancy V. (9), Adam (7), Harriet E. (5), Euphima D. (1), and two unrelated people. Other Federal censuses enumerate Adam and his family only in Cambria (1830, 1840, 1860, 1870), and they are consistent with the Lockport, not the Cambria 1850 enumeration. Preumably in ca. 1850 Adam had a business or residence in Lockport as a grocer. Nevertheless the Lockport record fits Adam's known family better than the Cambria record, in which Elizabeth (21), Mariah (18), Elizabeth (16), Joseph (16), and Mercy (11), but not Adam (7), Harriet (5), and Euphamia (1) are unexplained. Elizabeth (21) and Joseph (16) may have been the children of his brother Joseph, but the others are unexplained.
Benajmin as father to either Joseph or Adam is not well-established, However Adam's brother Joseph Lewis did name a son Adam, he named one Joseph, and this is the only branch of the family known to be in the Niagara area at this time. 3951
