• Fact: 1873-1878, , Codington Co., South Dakota, USA. 4852 George Spencer Codington served three years in the Civil War before entering the ministry. In 1873 the Rev. Codington, a Presbyterian minister, and his wife came to the little settlement of Medary, preached to those living there and established regular services. He traveled on horseback over the southeastern part of Dakota for many years and no settlement was too small to receive his attention. When the settlement began at Watertown he made that his headquarters and preached there for many years. He was highly respected and when the County was organized it was named Codington in his honor. He died Sept 19, 1878 in Ann Arbor, Mich of "consumption."
