  General Notes:

William was a revolutionary war soldier. He was a farmer and lived in Cumberland Co., Maryland, where he owned a plantation of 300 acres and some slaves. In 1808 he was Justice of the Peace. His farm was one mile west of Selbysport on the Morgantown road. His will, dated May 21, 1827, and probated June 12, 1827, bequeaths to wife her "thirds" and "one mulatter girl [slave] named Hett." To son Benjamin $500.00, son John. Heirs of daughter Elizabeth Potter, decease." The remainder of his estate was to be divided equally between Benjamin, John, and the heirs of his daughter, Elizabeth Potter.

William was a settler west of Fort Cumberland in 1788

The city of Cumberland took its name from the Fort and was established in 1785. It became the county seat when the county was chartered in 1789. George Washington spent part of his early career at Fort Cumberland and at a log cabin he used as his headquarters during the French and Indian War. The headquarters is now located at Riverside Park in Cumberland. Allegany County was an important center of transportation for travelers heading west. People traveled by canal, train, horse and buggy. The National Road, the first federally funded highway, began in Cumberland. 373,62,377,378,379

county, that the election for delegates in said county was held by Jonas McPherson, a deputy of the said sheriff, and that there were no other candidates but John Buchanan, Ambrose Geoghegan, James McClain and John Cellar, Esquires, who are returned by the sheriff of said county as duly elected; that the said sheriff has not certified whether he was prevented from attending said election by sickness, to ascertain which fact your committee are of opinion, that the said sheriff should be summoned to the bar of the house to correct his return.
