  General Notes:

John owned some land in Woodbridge which had formerly been the property of James Clarkson. John was a Constable of Woodbridge in 1739. A yeoman.
Excerpt from Will: "Moreover it is my will that the one half of that piece of Salt Meadow in Sunken Marsh which I bought of Samuel Fitzrandolph shall be sold by my Executors hereafter named & my Negro wench calld Bess [evidently a slave] shall in like manner be sold & Applyed towards paying my Just Debts." 398

• He signed a will on 11 Nov 1757 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA. 397,399,400 To All Christian People to whom this writing shall come Know Yee that I John Coddington of the Township of Woodbridge in the county of Middlesex and Province of New Jersey being (on this eleventh day of November in the year of Christ One thousand Seven hundred and fifty-Seven) in a weak State of health but of Sound and perfect mind & memory being minded to Settle my Worldly affairs do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the following manner and form.
First it is my Will and I do order that all my just Debts and Funeral Charges be paid by my Executors as soon as may be conveniently done after my Decease.
Secondly I give and bequeath to my wife Margret Coddington the one equal third part of all my Moveable Estate that remains after paying my just Debts as abovesaid which shall remain to her her Heirs and Assigns forever.
Item I Give and bequeath to my daughter Abigail Coddington the one equal third part of all my moveable Estate which shall be kept for her carefully and Delivered to her on her marriage day or when she arrives to the age of twenty-one years if not then married and shall remain to her her Heirs and assigns forever.
Item I Give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Coddington the remaining third part of all my moveable Estate which shall be carefully kept for her and delivered to her on her marriage day or when she arrives to the age of twenty one years if not then married and shall remain to her her Heirs and assigns forever. Moreover I Give to my abovesd. Wife Margrett the use and benefit of one Room (her choice) in my Dwelling House and also the whole use benefit and advantage of all my Lands and Improvements Meadows and appurtenances being my Home place whereon I now Dwell with firewood for one fire place in said House and no more she making no wast but common wear excepted which Priviledge my said Wife shall have and enjoy for the Term and Space of Seven Years from and after the date of this Instrument the better to enable her to bring up my young Children.
Item I give and bequeath to my eldest Son James Coddington the sum of five shilling current money of East Jersey and also one Freehold Right in the undivided lands in the Common of Woodbridge which Right formerly belonged to Jonathan Dennis to be to him his Heirs and Assigns forever the rest of his Portion he has had before now.
Item I give and bequeath to my son Robert Coddington the Westermost half of that Lot of Land being about forty one acres more or less which I bought of Jacob FitzRandolph lying on the Small Cove or Creek called Cedar Cove with all the orchards and Improvements on that part standing or being and likewise a piece of Salt Meadow in Sunken Marsh about three acres & a half to be taken off the piece I bought there of Samll. FitzRandolph to him his Heirs and Assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my Son John Coddington the remainder being the Eastermost half part of that forty one Acres I bought of Jacob Fitz Randolph lying on the aforesd Cedar Cove partly bounded on said Randolph's Land with all the appurtenances and Improvements thereto belonging to him his Heirs and assigns forever. Moreover it is my Will that the one half of that piece of Salt Meadow in Sunken Marsh which I bought of Samuel Fitz Randolph shall be Sold by my Executors hereafter named and my Negro Wench call'd Bess shall in like manner be sold and applied towards paying my just Debts.
Item I give and bequeath to my Son Daniel Coddington all and singular the rest of my Land and Meadows Tenements and appurtenances which is not yet given away he paying to my son David Coddington the Sum of Twenty pounds of good & current money of this Province at the time when Daniel arrives to the age of twenty Seven years and Daniel shall come to the Possession of his Portion at the Age of twenty one Years and in like manner my youngest Sons Robert and John shall come to the Possession of their Lands and Meadows when they each Successively come to the age of twenty one years and they shall likewise each pay to my son David the Sum of Five pounds current money of this Province as they successively come to the age of twenty five years Moreover if either of my Sons should die and leave no lawful living Issue then the Portion of the deceased shall be sold and Divided equally among the Surviving Brethren and Sisters. Also I Will and bequeath my Freehold Right that was Robert Dennis's to my four youngest Sons David, Robert, Daniel and John to each a like part to them their Heirs and Assigns forever.
Lastly I hereby nominage constitute and appoint my well-esteemed Friend William Edgar and my well beloved wife Margret Coddington Executors of this my Last Will and Testament And I do hereby utterly Disallow revoke and disannul all & every other former Wills Testaments and Legacies by me heretofore named Will'd or bequeathed ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament
In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the Eleventh day of November as abovesd. In the year of Christ One thousand Seven hundred & fifty Seven.
