James CODDINGTON 293,399

  • Born: 5 Jan 1725, Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA 414
  • Marriage: Sarah DUNHAM before 1754 287
  • Died: Bef 1774

  General Notes:

Made entry for his earmark for cattle, etc, on May 10, 1751, consisting of a crop on the right ear and a hole in the left ear.
The marriage of James to Sarah Dunham is not proved. John Insley Coddington in his publications on his ancestors in the male line suggests this as a reasonable hypothesis. The evidence is that Sarah Hodgson, the mother of Robert Coddington, took her son ill with smallpox, "generally thought to be dangerous" to the house of James Dunham in Westfield. Given the risk, Sarah and James presumably were closely related. Sarah and James Dunham had a brother, Joseph, born and residing in Westfield. In an unpublished family group chart, John I. Coddington also entertained the notion that James' wife may have been Sarah FitzRandolph.
His death date is not known, but IF Sarah Dunham Coddington married Daniel Noe in time to have Nathaniel in 1774, James must have died before 1774.
Although John Insley Coddington identified David Coddington c. 1757 as a son of this James Coddington 1725, the 1807 letter by Moses Coddington, son of David Coddington and Ann Stone, refers to his brother David, living on Staten Island, with "four boys, all living." There was only one David Coddington living on Staten Island at this time and he is reasonably well-documented. 415,416
