  General Notes:

Died at 124 N. Division St. (Home of Edwin F. Coddington)
Applied for pension as mother of Roswell G Coddington at Buffalo, 11 Oct. 1890

She witnessed the hanging of the "Three Thayers." "I came from Batavia with my beau. There were six of us in the carriage and I remember that the roads in all directions were crowded with people coming to see the execution. It was a beautiful spring day, and all about Niagara Square the trees were standing in almost a thick woods. They bled the prisoners in the jail before they brought them to the scaffold, and I can see them now as they reeled along, walking by the bearers. They were bled so that would be less likely to strangle, and I suppose so they would die quicker.
I can see yet just now the great crowd looked when it was almost time for them to die. Many waked away and I turned my face; but my beau said, 'What do you want to come 45 miles to see a hanging for and then turn your head and not see it?" So I faced about again and saw it all."
I remember that the Sheriff swung his sword three times before he cut the rope that let the drop fall. Every time he swung the sword the sun would flash on the blade and the prisoners would dodge and wince. I suppose the sunlight showed up under their caps.
They fell about five feet and died. I have hardly ever gone to bed since that day, 68 years ago, but what some part of the terrible scene comes before my eyes."

"The Thayer brothers murdered a money lender. Although their possession of his belongings met with suspicion, they escaped detection for many weeks until the victim's body was found in the woods. As their versified dying address put it: "With hearts as hard as devils have, we hollowed out the shallow grave, and vainly hoped no human eye would e'er the mangled corpse espy. . . . The gallows now must end our days, and we must walk the unknown ways of that dark world beyond the tomb, where all must meet their final doom."
